Laura Karetzky: Open Studio, Sept 27 and Sept 28, 1-6pm
DUMBO Art Under the Bridge Festival
Press release for:
Lora Schlesinger Gallery: Laura Karetzky/AWOL, Oct 25 - Nov 29, 2008
In this new series (as in her past work), Laura Karetzky explores psychological themes with intense subtlety. The subject is the lone figure of a man, isolated in a courtyard or arena, privately struggling with an invisible enemies or personal demons. There is a thread of paranoia betrayed by his countenance, and he alternately appears to be doing battle or hiding out. Using the concept of a matador sans the bull as a starting point, the artist examines issues of war, isolation, barriers, and vulnerability. Painted in oil on linen, the show consists of large scale paintings interspersed with very small paintings. The palette is rich and subdued, and the scene is enhanced by the bold use of light and shadow.
Laura Karetzky’s painting Lean Back was displayed at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC, as a finalist in the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition 2006. In the same year she was the recipient of the Rotunda/BCAT Artist Residency. Karetzky has received The Christine Dombrowski and Thomas Ayoub Award, and First Place in the Blance Ames Competition. Her education includes; degrees from Carnegie-Mellon University and the New York Academy of Art, and training from the School of Visual Arts, The New York Studio School, Rhode Island School of Design, and an intensive one-year study in Florence Italy.
Laura Karetzky/AWOL opens Saturday, October 25th from 5-7 pm. AT Lora Schlesinger Gallery, located in the Bergamot Station Arts Center, 2525 Michigan Ave. T3, Santa Monica, CA.
