- Artist’s Statement

‘Actually, you were brought from under the bridge.’

This is an old joke you might have told as a kid for not behaving yourself if you grew up Korea. The joke is originated from a story of the bridge Chung Dari in Korean history in 16th Century, which was not far from a private college where many young students came to study. They say some girls in the neighborhood would have a relationship with them. If they ever had unwanted babies as a result, under the bridge was a place for them to leave the babies. Some would get lucky to survive, but some would not.

Manhattan Bridge is a vessel of New York City.
Trains pass loudly on the bridge, keeping the city in life.
As noisy as our life is like above the bridge, we often forget the silent moments of birth and death, where our life stays between.

Bridge and legs are both called ‘Dari’ in Korean.
Under the legs of the city, some are lucky to live but some are not,
Like the babies under the bridge.
