Bryan Safi's "That's Gay" Picks
Bryan Safi is a writer for InfoMania and host of "That's Gay." We asked him to share his favorite "That's Gay" moments of the year.
As the second season for That’s Gay comes to a close (l’m pretending we have seasons, so roll with it), I figure this is a great time to look back at my favorite segments of 2010. Especially since I won’t be able to do this at the end of next year (We’re all on board with the Mayan 2012 thing, right?). So let’s look back. Laugh a little, cry a little, dance a little, shrug a little.
Johnny Weir
You know that feeling you get when you see a wild dolphin leap into the waves with his friends? Or the sensation of a slight breeze on your face caused by the dazzling wings of a hummingbird a few feet away? For me, that can be compared to taking in the supreme athletic artistry of Johnny Weir on the ice this Winter Olympics. But that feeling was not shared by the media. Their question was, “Is Johnny Weir too gay for figure skating?” Yes, 2010, that was a conversation that kicked you off this year.
Video Games
I learned a lot this year doing That’s Gay. One of the things that blows my mind is that I never knew how progressive the video gaming world actually is. And also, way, way, way more kinky than I had ever thought. So the next time you’re at Game Stop, remember that the dude with shifty eyes behind the counter is probably an ally. With a huge imagination.
Grindr
This was the most fun piece I’ve ever done ever. Tech reporter Ben Hoffman took me to West Hollywood and taught me all about Grindr, the iPhone app that uses GPS to let you locate and hook up with guys. I’m constantly impressed with how much gays have revolutionized dating and sex technology. From bandanas to manhunt and now to Grindr, we up the ante when it comes to hooking up.
Prop 8
Prop 8 is still in legal hell right now. But there was a short, short time before it went to the Court of Appeals that West Hollywood celebrated its overturning. I went there to get in on the action. The end will shock you.
A-List Audition
In case you’re one of those people who avoids the things that make your brain say, “I srsly hate u,” I’m in a full-fledged campaign to be an ugh-lister on the new season of The A-List: Los Angeles. I made this audition tape for it, and I still haven’t heard a thing back! There’s even this Facebook campaign to get me on there. Won’t anyone help me make my life worse?
