Speaking to anyone who uses/has used their phone while driving, you know who you are, let's be honest with ourselves. Personally, I will take my eyes off the road to change the song on my ipod (which is essentially inside my phone since i have an iphone). But how ridiculous is that? I am risking my life for a split second so I can jam out to a OMG by Usher feat. Will.i.am on my way to class. It's absurd, really.
I think the best and only real solution would be if everyone personally made a conscious effort to change their behavior for the safety of our roads.
Whatever it is, it can wait.

If I teach you guys the trick you have to use it wisely because I've been completely ran off the road myself by the move.
1. From the driver seat of your car make eye contact with the distracted driver. Make sure they notice you.
2. As soon as you have there attention start making angry gestures as if your really angry and swearing at the person. Most people attention will fall on you as they try and comprehend what your saying. If not flip them the bird if you have to just to keep there attention.
3. This is where you execute the move. As soon as they get the look on there face like "What the hell is this guys problem?" Grab the steering wheel and instead of gripping the wheel let your hands hover over the wheel but pretend you just jerked the wheel as if your going to push them off the road but don't really turn the wheel. It has to be so dramatic they are convinced it's real. Put your shoulders into it.
4. Watch in amazement as the phone is instantly dropped from there hands and they swerve out of your way to avoid a collision that was never going to happen. I was checking out a guys girlfriend in a car next to me one time when he got me with this trick. It takes practice to execute convincingly but when done right will have someone in the shoulder of the road wondering why someone would do such a thing about the time you realize they never really swerved.
I drove past the guy at the next light and the guy and the girl were in tears laughing so hard at my reaction that I just laughed it off. If you guys get someone hurt during this it's all your fault though. Mine was on a slow moving street close to a street light and there was nothing next to me to run into. Don't get anyone hurt if you pull this move people.I swerved clean off the road and the car next to me didn't move towards me at all.

I do not think a such device can be created. There will always be some type of distraction while driving. It can be the radio, kids, something on your mind, something you see on the street, cellphone, sunglasses, and the list goes on and on.

considering that i get distracted quite often whenever i do drive if not by singing and dancing , or yelling children or even just looking for miscellaneous things...i would say create a device that only allows your radio to reach a certain decibel so that everything outside of the car is still audible i.e. horns pedestrians talking (because sometimes you can hear something or someone before you see them) or whistles that traffic cops use...as for looking for things that is the drivers discretion i have often thought twice and pulled over to the side of the road to look for something-not always though, as for yelling children well depending on a driver's rush status again pulling over to the side of the road to quell an infant or toddler is the best option, and i dont use a cellphone when i drive, i either turn it off completely or turn the ringer off and put it in the glove compartment, my phone isn't really that important to me anyway. So creating a device can help but also cause another distraction because some people like to fiddle with things including myself but it still would help some, i think practicing better responsible driving is the best option...

We need better driver education. Several European countries have per capita death rates that are almost 1/3 of ours.
Number of deaths per 100,000 members of the population
United Kingdom 5.81
Sweden 5.88
Norway 6.01
.......
USA 14.75http://www.driveandstayalive.com/info%20section/statistics/stats-multicountry-pe...

how about putting contact studs for electric shocks into cell phones that activate a mild shock if they detect that they're traveling over running speed? you'd have to turn them off or plug them into a hands free device to use them in a car or on a bike!

I wouldn't, I would curb driving itself. Bring back the robot self driving cars. Not a single one ever got into a carwreck!

Radically reduce the number of distractions bombarding the general public every day. Between Twitter, facebook, email, commercials, television, radio, and others, we've become a culture devoid of any valuable attention span. Eliminate these distractions, get people focused on the tasks in front of them as a matter of practice, not as an exception to their everyday lives.
Yeah, try writing that into legislation.

First off, Stop using flashy emergency highway billboards to say "No distracted driving! Phone in one hand, ticket in the other!" because A. Its like reading an over sized text message that takes 30 seconds to read the whole thing and B. Makes me ignore that signs all together so i might miss some important information.
Second. increase the fines and make texting and driving a higher fine.
Third, find a target age group. Are more people 16- 14 being pulled over more? then increase the penalty.
Fourth, make car phone easier to afford and install. Maybe even have a promotion day like sign a no distracted driving petition or something and get so and so perfect off the product. - 1 year ago

Dmerza1989:
I totally agree with your fourth point. Right now "features" like bluetooth phone integration are being treated like a high cost luxury. These types of technologies could be extremely useful in curbing cell phone use while driving. Making them more readily available could have an impact.

Dmerza1989:
I doubt that we'll be able to get rid of billboards, but I agree with 2 & 4. (As far as 3 goes, there already kind of is an established age group.)
My uncle has a car that syncs with his iPhone, making calling and being called safer. While these are still distractions, he is much less likely to wreck.
Here's my analogy:
Making protection unavailable will not make teens stop having sex. It will only encourage unprotected sex.
In the same sense, making safer technologies more readily available is our best bet. Placing an all-out ban on all distractions will not help.If we want to keep people safe, we have to provide them will the tools to be safe.

You don't really believe that using a phone while driving is an essential human need, such as sex, do you?
Anyhow, like toyotabedzrock said: In quite a few countries, most of them in Europe, the death toll is a lot lower than in the US. In these countries, it is illegal to handle your cell phone while driving. Hands-off devices are allowed thou. - 1 year ago

The key is to get people to realize what a deleterious effect distractions have on driving. Perhaps a spin or two in a simulator for new drivers?
