Is Big Oil a necessary evil?

This article argues that while we might be unhappy with large oil companies, the alternative might be something more sinister. If these companies didn't maintain power, even more corrupt leaders from developing nations would be in control.

Is Big Oil a necessary evil? Are there better solutions?

    • I don't agree with the use of the term necessary evil. It just doesn't express a context. Are we talking right now? The past? Future? Always?
Well for our past and present were/are certainly necessary to maintain our society. But will they be needed in the future, and will this "Evil" continue to be necessary? Given the potential technologies and their rate of advancement, it seems very probable that the "alternatives" to the majority of petroleum products posses the ability to displace them.

So simply put; For the time being yes, but not for my entire lifetime.

    • Not oil but the people who are in charge. More efforts need to be made to find another resouce that can be used to make many of the things we make with oil.
Oil companies would obviously be against that so they will try their best to fight it. Whatever other resource they find that can be used instead of oil is unfortunately still another resource that will be used...which would probably take us back to the same place we're in now...

    • no! petroluem products, although in every home, can be replaced.

our dependency on oil is a direct result of greedy and cowardly lawmakers who have known of the dangers we face today back in the early 70's.

is oil evil? no! it is the men/women sworn to protect us that are inherently evil!

    • If it is then that would mean toxic oxygen depleted oceans are a necessary evil. And dying ecosystems are a necessary evil. And disease is a necessary evil. And toxic air and water are necessary evils. And fossil fuel pesticide ridden food is a necessary evil. And that then means the quality of our lives is the price for a necessary evil. And that should simply be unacceptable to a species with a moral conscience.
