On the ninth anniversary of 9/11, have we truly begun to heal?
In the nine years after 9/11, has our country really had a chance to heal? This year, the 9/11 anniversary has been at the center of a number of controversies, from threatened Quran burnings in Florida to debate over an Islamic community center set to be built in lower Manhattan to American Muslims toning down Eid Al-Fitr celebrations (Eid is the major holiday commemorating the end of Ramadan; this year, it falls on September 10th.) for fear they will be seen as supporting the attacks.
Although these have been the stories dominating the media, they are not the only ones. At the same time, there will be memorials held across the country, including an annual Buddhist interfaith ceremony in New York.
In light of both the controversies and rememberances in the media, do you think that America has truly begun to heal from the events of 9/11? If not, what do you think we need to do to begin to close the wounds?

In order to heal, one has to WANT to heal. Clinging to tragedy and placing it on a pedestal is absolutely not conducive to healing but empowers victimhood - the kind that uses itself for the manipulation of others. Londoners who suffered infinitely more during the Blitz (and had far more deaths and destruction) did not at all cling to those years, they did not pose themselves as victims, so they healed very fast indeed.

I think we already have healed we just haven t noticed. We are so consumed with negative emotions because of 8 years under a fear based administration that used 9/11 to gain support for their own agenda. Also, I think we should have started to rebuild the towers about 5 years ago it could have sent the correct message to the world and our citizens "You can take our lives, but you will never take our spirit, so you will never prevail"

I think we have begun to heal, but we lost the momentum of pride in our United States that was everywhere after 9/11. For a few weeks, we set aside differences and stood, as we should as one nation, one people, united. I felt that maybe the entire political BS would simmer down and we could move forward and work together, and find solutions and compromise for us all. I was wrong.
I really miss the American Flags flying proud on people’s trucks and cars, on homes and businesses. That loss honestly makes me feel like crying. - 1 year ago

For the past 5 years, 9/11 has gone by without much of a stint.
This year it's out of control.
The difference is that this year the right-wing spin machine has worked full time to draw up fear and hatred as part of election year bullshit.
America has pretty much healed from 9/11. We're not scared of terrorists and we don't want to invade any more countries.
What we're seeing is the deeper rooted problem of Americans being ignorant, reactionary morons. That's a wound that's been openly flowing since the late 1970's, and so far there is no sign of healing.

The victims and their friends and families were the one's who truly suffered. I don't think it's fair or justified to say America suffered as nation- aside from our newfound intolerance towards Islam. That doesn't look like it's going to heal anytime soon.

Healed ??? Mostly,.... Yep.
-And we have put the "scar tissue" behind us,.... awaiting "new growth"
[ which MAY never really occur however; NYC plainly being somewhat puny in the department of architectural development -they may NEVER get the ol' FREEDOM TOWER built" ]
but we -HAVE - JUST BEGUN- to exercise our arms and deploy our global muscle. The rehab is not going to end soon.p.s. Don't -Vd me for the "endorsement",...its NOT,... necessarily ,...just an observation.

Fuck no! So long as ignorance and arrogance remain the cornerstones of United States foreign policy as well as the American political conscience, we should expect more 9/11 style terrorist attacks.

I "disagree" the about the "Fuck No",........( but not about the analysis. I think we are just responding to "healed" from different perspectives.)
We ARE back to "Our ol' Self" again- this is not an across the board endorsement,...but we ARE back to our old habits,....perhaps with more focus and intensity than we have had in a while. ( Pain helping to compensate for "age n fatigue" in our cultural motivation. )

A broken leg will "heal" even if it isn't properly set--the result is a permanent limp. Hence, I threw in the "fuck no" commentary. It's awfully difficult to believe that our nation has become more admired by the world since 9/11 (even though we have a more competent administration at the proverbial wheel).
Our foreign policy, though, has changed little. We are still perceived as "invaders" of Muslim lands. We still have military bases in over 130 nations. We continue to bleed resources from nations through predatory lending practices espoused by both the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. We still keep corrupt dictatorships in place, and topple democratic movements in developing countries. I'd say that's still our same 'ol selves.
Domestically, things are just as bad as has been evinced by the whole Ground Zero community center and the Q'uran burning thing. While this phenomenon does not represent the whole of our society, it certainly sends a disturbing message to people that we are purportedly attempting to "liberate" or "help."
American society needs to take a hard look at itself and start asking some tough questions. Only then, will this country begin to truly "heal."

My point was that - we are back to using our 'legs' ( arms ) just as we did before,....but with an enforced and renewed VIGOR; We ALREADY were "the bull in the world's china shop" BEFORE 9/11,....and we are back to it NOW.
If by "HEAL" you mean "personal psychological growth and development",....then NO,...we have not. In spite of new military tech,...we have not had some sort of bionic spiritual evolution; we are not "
better,...faster,...stronger" men on a spiritual basis. - 1 year ago

Is the word heal, or is it just that it fades from our consciousness? Are we "healed" from Pearl Harbor? Do those scars ever really heal? I would say as long as there are wars being fought because of it, no, we have not begun to heal.

People don't get that the main goal of terrorism is terror.
They wanted to upset the way we live, and the way we think- and the terrorists won.We have Glen Beck and Sarah Palin feeding the flames of fear for millions of people, making the terror more terrifying every day.
Something as insignificant as a Community Center becomes an international issue. All over the country Mosques are being protested. One moron plans to burn Korans, and at least two others are planning to do it as well.
We can't heal if those people keep opening the wound.

I never really was "wounded", as I was 7 at the time of the attacks and never started giving a shit. I feel bad that people died, but I don't understand how people are still so melodramatic about it.

Well, I do think the media can be a bit overly dramatic about it, but that's just what they do. Being 7 at the time, I am sure it's hard for you to understand why this day stands out for so many Americans. Just like everyone 60 and over remembers what they were doing when they found out JFK got shot, it marks a moment in our nation's history when we just don't feel safe anymore, when the innoncence had been robbed from us. And you have to remember that for a lot of Americans it was a very personal tragedy. A lot of people lost friends and loved ones, but 300,000 people were also caught up in the mess in downtown Manhattan that day. It was a very frightening experience to be part of. It's really hard to heal from that. You've never really known the world before that happened, but at the time it was unfathomable.

if people havent begun to heal they have either forgotten completely or still just being prejudice and not trying to progress beyond the tragedy. Although it is history it is a learning experience than USA doesnt control as much as we think we control...(if we really do "control" what we think we do). so...basically no on e that remembers and mourns it has healed. But to mend the wounds i would suggest not mourning and creating controversy but ameliorating how aggresssive USA is in demanding that other countries follow us or do as we do.
