In this economy, can you choose a job you are passionate about over a job that pays a lot?
A recent study shows that that 80% of people are dissatisfied with their jobs.
As the economy falters and more companies downsize, laid-off workers are being faced with a new decision: find more work as a corporate cog or create something new for themselves.
An August issue of Bloomberg Business Week quotes John Seely Brown...
"more people seem to be choosing a passion over a paycheck... In a world of mounting economic pressure driven by intensifying global competition, passion is essential to the kind of performance improvement needed to succeed."
Is he right? Will more people use the downtime they face from unemployment to become entrepreneurs? In this economy can you choose a job you are passionate about over a job that pays a lot?

Well if your in science or health sciences then yes but most people that are not doing certificate programs or something in nursing would need at least a masters from what i have seen. Lucky I love science, people not so much but science most definitely :) A decent amount of people i know were communication majors and they have had an hard time finding work, let alone finding a job that is not going to completely screw them. So pretty much it depends on your 1. level of education and 2. Major/Interest. Also most students i know have left their jobs to get more classes in at school/ apply for higher education. Work sucks!

In this economy, I'll say that I'm going to choose the job that pays a lot....in these days, more money is always welcome!

As long as the passionate job is enough to keep you afloat and moderately happy by having basic needs taken care of (food, shelter, clothing, possibly transportation) and having small amounts of recreation, absolutely.
Whether or not the job you are passionate for is able to give you these things in today's economy, however, is probably debatable. The job that 'pays more" may be the one you need to actually stay afloat, unfortunately.

of course! choose a job you are passionate about and never work a day for the rest of your life!
especially in this economy...this is the time to rebuild family 'culture' and recognize that the only real goal we should aspire to is to love passionately and honestly savor the times with family and friends!

I found a sense of freedom when I walked away from my higher paying corporate job. I may be broke, I may buy my jeans at thrift stores but I'm a million times happier.

i was fired from my waitressing job which i was glad about due to the stress of the type of people i worked with but for the brief moment that was unemployed i was upset about not having any income but now i'm at a job that i actually enjoy it doesnt pay as much as waitressing did but i'm not constantly pissed off just to make a few extra dollars an hour and waiting for someone to tip, i get to do things that i love and i'm not exhausted from work from walking back and forth with hurting feet and just a lot more shit to make money of other people

I am currently trying to move to the Twin Cities[Minneapolis, MN]. I'm willing to take any job. I have had more call backs and phone interviews for MSP in 2 weeks than I have for 3 years in my home town near Joliet, IL.

I remember reading an article with an interview with Daft Punk with the following quote making my point:
"We've got much more control than money. You can't get everything. We live in a society where money is what people want, so they can't get the control. We chose. Control is freedom. People say we're control freaks, but control is controlling your destiny without controlling other people. We're not trying to manipulate other people, just controlling what we do ourselves. Controlling what we do is being free. People should stop thinking that an artist that controls what he does is a bad thing. A lot of artists today are just victims, not having control, and they're not free. And that's pathetic. If you start being dependent on money, then money has to reach a point to fit your expenses"

I went to school and entered into quite a bit of debt to be a high school English teacher because I was passionate about it. I now work concessions at a theme park.

Well passions and jobs are not necessarily one and the same right? With that understanding I would chose passion and hold a job that allows me to persue that passion.
