What makes people hate 'hipsters'?

This week What Was The Hipster? hits the shelves. It purports to describe the past ten years of the youth subculture for future generations.

A recent Guardian article profiling anti-hipster blog: Hackney Hipster Hate (UK analog to Look At This F*cking Hipster) quotes the book to discover the root of hipster hatred.

One of the books author's suggests...

"The hipster, is the bogeyman who keeps us from becoming too settled in our identity, keeps us moving forward into new fashions, keep us consuming more 'creatively' and discovering new things that haven't become lame and hipster. We keep consuming more, and more cravenly, yet this always seems to us to be the hipster's fault, not our own."

Does this begin explain anti-hipster sentiment?

What makes people hate 'hipsters'?

Are there other social-cultural movements that get wrongly accused of being hipsters? Is the sentiment unfairly directed at artists and intellectuals?

Do you hate hipsters? Why?

What makes some a hipster anyway?

    • My girlfriend loves obscure music, does not adhere to social trends, enjoys indie everything, has that cute aloofness of zooey deschanel, loves PBR, and yet i would never say she is a hipster for one reason. She isn't pretentious about the aforementioned qualities, in my opinion a hipster is made from showing off their "non conformity" and all the while just looking like douche bags

    • Adbusters did a great article on the hipsters a few years back called the dead end of western civilization.

It appears Rebellion has morphed into a self-obsessed (and obviously self-loathing) "aesthetic vacuum" not driven as much by ideals as by marketing and mass awareness through globalization of all things "cool".

In his words, Douglas Haddow's article sums up a harsh reality. "The hipster represents the end of Western civilization – a culture so detached and disconnected that it has stopped giving birth to anything new."

Could a new counterculture emerge that professes disconnecting from social media in an attempt to be real? Doing rather than just watching? Just a thought.

    • labels are lame... and its mostly used by indie bands and fans to describe each other when they get jealous of one another achievements like most stereotypes its a way to subject another person to a label,or title in order to reduce them to something other than the person as a human and deserving of respect ...its become a pop word so high school kids add it to there terror repetoire to belittle and bully kids that are creative artistic free-thinkers. Our society makes the artists outcasts and "Hipsters" if you will...but its wrongly used and out of a true context of anything other than NERD DORK FAG etc. etc American society fears free-thought and creative expression let alone original and diverse culture sexual preferences and so on... Grow up and if you use the word don't its just another way to look past the valuable divine things we all share as bro's & sisters of the human experience
      just what i think ...

    • The fact that it is a trend, and the forced "alternative" view of the world.

There are some natural, genuine hipsters out there. However most of the ones you see on the street are just pretending. This makes the little and genuine group of hipsters look bad. In fact, I've seen wannabee hipsters discriminate or feel discussed about the genuine ones. I used to think Tolerance was an important part of being a hipster. I've found that nowadays, that really has nothing to do with it. Today is like a competition to see who is more f^&* up. This probably derives from all the constant stories of great people from the planet and how they where so f#$% up.

I also heard, and this comes from a friend, but the fact that they are very attached to material things, despite their projection. They love nice thingies so sometimes they will actually steel from their friends.
But at the end of the day, we probably can't judge one another, because to us this might not look good, but there are tons of things you yourself (the reader or anyone really) have that is disgusting to others. However most of the time people won't let you know so you'll continue doing it.

    • Jealousy and/or a sense of self-loathing, without a sense of humor about it.

John Darnielle, author and frontman of the Mountain Goats, said roughly: 'When you say "I hate this place; it's full of hipsters," what you're saying is you're a hipster, and you identify with the people in that place.'

    • you what's hilarious about this debate is, as the article points out the hipster critics can't even settle on what the hell a hipster is! It's becomes basically a derogatory blanket term for young outsiders who maybe fashion conscious, urban hippies, DIYers, indie kids, eco conscious, [insert topic] snobs, wookies, nerds, artists etc.

    • I think there's a key difference with the hipster movement that sets it apart from other subcultures-- Nobody brags about being a hipster. Hipsters are too cool to admit/acknowledge that they are hipsters.
Honestly, I'm friends with a whole lot of hipsters. While I'm sure that most of them are aware that they are considered to be hipsters by others, many don't self-identify with the group. Even for the ones that might, none would ever let that fact be known. With other subcultures it's more clearcut. If you're a goth there's no shame in admitting that you're goth.
I guess it all goes along with the pretentiousness of hipsters. Hipsters are too cool to be hipsters. That's why people hate them. I don't think that they really believe that they are better than everyone else, I know a lot of hipsters fighting for social justice, doing some really good things in the community. But overall they are floundering for meaning and for social acceptance. They don't want to come off as uncool or behind the times, so instead they come off as pretentious.

    • the same reasons they have for hating a goth, emo, prep ? I don't hate them, the ones i have met are kind of the generic "im so different" but do whats trendy? Maybe its my age but i just say grow up and and wear and do what you want and destroy these little subcultures by becoming a truly independent person not needing fellow recognition. I mean at some point most grow out of being something and into a person (sort of) so then does it truly matter?

      Google it.

However, it depends who you're asking. One person could tell you they're an open-minded, intellectual who are passionate about the arts, another could tell you they're pretentious swill. With every subculture, there's the good people who are truly interesting and intelligent, and the bad ones who are just straight-up assholes. Either way, no one cares.

    • People hate hipsters because people are like ignorant sheep who just love to act and think like those around them....
Atleast you can have an intellegent conversation with a hipster, unlike most fratboys and sorority girls...

    • I think it's so stupid because there really are people who just dress "hipster" but don't act like liberal arts douche-bags. It's not like "hipster" is like some kind of evil cult. I mean sure there probably are some bitchy people out there that just think they're so cool, because they wear plaid shirts and jeans and went to art school, but who cares about them? I mean I wear plaid shirts and jeans, does that make me a hipster? I just think it's kind of annoying.

    • People hate hipsters for two reasons, being the air of pretentious self-serving fauxhemian fodder they emit, and shutter shades are the worst idea since cancelling Rotten Tomatoes.

As a goth and understanding member of a pretentious borderline gay subculture, I wish I could say that they're decent human beings and don't deserve the shit they get from the majority of society, but I can't. Hipsters are the product of suburban whitebread households who feel the need to act out and attempt to be "alternative" because Mommy and Daddy didn't buy them that pony they always wanted.

Furthermore, hipsters have no legitimate cause as to their "lifestyle". Punks were politically driven, goths questioned the standards and philosophies of society, but hipsters have no true meaning. All in all they're a social gathering of pampered young adults, striving to be socially acceptable and unique in a world of carbon copies like themselves...well, not as much as the goths. ;)

      ...Except my man Sergio.

so people need a politcal stance to further ones self image and creativity?? Thats fuckin retarded, let people be themselves and dont expect everyone to conform to the norms of society, you should be less ignorant than that your a goth for christ's sake your gonna sit here and try and say your goth because your politcally motivated??? Even if that WERE true thats once again retarded you should just accept people for who they are and stop hopping on the retard bandwagon of hating people who are and strive to be different from the sheep around them...

    • BCDel89:

Still, let's think of this for a second: if a person is simply into vintage garb, Animal Collective, et cetera, fine by me. Definitively a hipster is someone who attempts to be completely unique and defy all labels whilst going out of their way to fit said label. You're right I should get that as a goth seeing they're roughly in the same boat, but personally the music is the reason why I got into it, not the social image.

All in all, you're taking this a bit too seriously not to mention getting a tad butthurt over it. Goth or hipster, it'll all be a sad memory decades from now. No need to cry, doll. Now go grab yourself a copy of Bauhaus "In The Flat Field" and have some fun instead of sobbing over a subculture that is clogging up the local thrift store. :)
