Do unofficial holidays like Black Friday help or harm the US economy?
On Monday (11/22) community member Revelation127 posted a link about Black Friday, which inspired today’s BFD post.
In the article that Revelation127 shared, the author pointed out that millions of American families will rush to stores like Wal-Mart and Target this Friday to take advantage of sales -- often on products manufactured overseas.
Considering the current debate over whether Congress should raise the US debt ceiling beyond $14.3 trillion, how do traditions like Black Friday factor into our economy’s woes and the unemployment crisis? Does Black Friday ultimately hurt or harm the US economy?

Black Friday is an interesting marketing thing. I think it helps the economy.

For the economy, this definitely adds a boost. However, as a country, I'm not sure if leveraging consumerism so heavily is a good idea.

It's smoke and mirrors. How does it help when people are using credit cards to pay for cheap c_ made in China (which outsourced American jobs) that costs them 23% interest that they can't pay when the bills come in the mail?

Thoughts of this "tradition": A consumer economy eventually "consumes" itself.
I think this interview hits the points and please listen to the so called "journalist":

Not sure. There's a lot of economic activity, but there's also a downturn right after, all those retail people loose their jobs after two and a half months, and everyone who splurged penny pinches harder to try to make up for the expenditures.

Black Friday helps the economy but only promotes what got us into this recession. A recession which only I seem to be feeling or the rest of America is in denial.

I think they help spur the economy, but I do get concerned that we, as a culture, put too much emphasis on Black Friday. Before we've so much as finished enjoying the company of our friends and family, the season already turns to "doorbusters" and crazy deals. Should the success/failure of Black Friday deals be seen as an indicator for economic recovery? It feels a little too much like we're placing too many eggs in the Black Friday basket.

neither. they create a false sense of bargains for cheap goods that are overpriced the rest of the year. if any harm is done its in the 2 weeks before when people maybe hold out, or the 2 weeks after when people decide to wait for xmas sales.
