If you could make a documentary about any issue around the world, what would it be?
This sponsored BFD is brought to you by The Economist Film Project, a collaborative initiative with PBS NewsHour to showcase the work of independent documentary filmmakers from around the world. Documentary shorts and feature-length films will be accepted monthly on a rolling basis through December 2011.
Over the years, many filmmakers have addressed the same issues from different perspectives. Food, Inc. touched on the fast food industry in a different way than Super Size Me framed the discussion, while Kamp Katrina and When the Levees Broke chose different methods to contextualize the tragedy in Louisiana.
If you could make a documentary about any issue in the world, which topic would you choose? How would you do it?
Do you have a completed short or feature-length documentary that you’d like to see air on PBS NewsHour? Submit your creation to The Economist Film Project. The project will feature films whose new ideas, perspectives, and insights not only help make sense of the world, but also take a stand and provoke debate.
The Economist will also provide filmmakers whose films are chosen with a grant of $4,000 to produce six to eight minutes of footage from the film (or footage captured during the making of the film) for airing on PBS NewsHour as part of a news segment.

I would like to see a documentary that quantifies the costs that China would incur to meet the U.S. standards for air, water, health and safety, social security, and disability insurance. Those costs should be imposed on imports from China to create the proverbial "level playing field" that is the keystone to capitalism's theory.

The degeneration of 'gaming' from a "thinking man's" arena/avocation/hobby,...
as it was slowly subsumed into the "computer-console" gaming industry, and degenerated from a rules mechanics, strategy, and RPG element based genre to a "trigger finger shoot-em-up" sport with an emphasis on audio-visual bells and whistles and graphic glitz.p.s. -Civilization, is still a good game.

The Documentary:
Selling Earth to "Greed" and "God": Over Population
We have not heed the warnings from futurist such as Desmond Morris, "The Naked Ape", Paul R. Ehrlich, "The Population Bomb " and scores of others who had the insight to see that the biggest hurdle human existence would confront, would be man himself. Over population has led to over deforrestation, pollution of our air and water, the extinction of thousands of species of life, mass starvation, man made global warming and destruction of the planet earth in name of progress, greed and religion.
Earth is a finite resource. Unlimited energy is not the answer to a sustainable earth. Like recycling is only a band aid that threats the symptoms but does not cure the disease. The reduction of the human population threats the disease.
How we achieve a solution may be one of biggest challenges to human civilization and one of the hardest we may have to come to grips with. But rest assured if we don’t, nature and the universe will.

Education is a major part of the solution but in resouce based economic theory a demand should never exceed supply..... The earth has a limited amount of resources, so therefore human demand can not exceed the earth resources. The "Human Factor" in this equation can not be infinite. We have accepted this theory in animal husbandry. We limit, say for example, the number of deer that can occupy a region based on available resouces to off-set starvation and resource depletion, so as to ensure that there is a deer population. Furthermore, your assertion that a population can not be controlled is not valid. History has demonstrated that populations have been controlled by a vast number of factors, both man made and natural. Such as ice ages (global warming), war, disease, meteors, etc. Resource management does include the "Human Factor", like it or not. As stated earlier........ if we don't....... nature and the universe will. Instead of marketing the green solution, maybe we should educate and overcome superstition and ignorance.

Do something that has not been documented accurately.
Chronic Lymes disease. Real Patients and their real struggles
with tick born illness' in 2011. At the very least a Mini series; coping with
Lymes disease on A&E or history channel.A few facts many do not know about it;
Lymes disease exists in 48 of the 50 states.
There are multiple co-infections of lymes disease (meaning its progressive)
Lymes disease is spread through Deer ticks, and in-utero.
Woman are often times misdiagnosed with MS when in fact they are suffering for Chronic Lymes disease.
There is no cure (Yet). Many many (Treatments).
I have been battling the disease for the last 7 1/2 years with rigorous treatment.
I contracted the disease when I was about 13 1/2 in Lyme, Connecticut.
Born and raised in the Bay Area and currently attending UCSB.
I have fought this battle with the intention of beating it. - 2 years ago

Hey Artemis,
To answer your question, coping is really a progressive term when describing my battle with lymes disease. Their is always medicine and supplements, however, they can only do so much to offset the babezia and bartonella co-infections that I have contracted. For all of my college career I have had shots administered in my deep muscular tissue to help combat the disease. It is rare that they make much of a difference. Aside from the meds I have been trying to eat correctly and stay on track with the treatments. Do you know of people with the disease?

I have a friend who is dying from it, or because she refuses to stop ingesting comfort poisons. What really got her was being misdiagnosed for a year. Lymes disease is best combated immediately.
Very good choice for a documentary. There are state medical institutions that still do not recognize Lymes disease as a disease.

Treewolf,
I am sorry to hear about your buddy. I definitely know how frustrating it can be to deal with Insurance and doctors who are not educated enough in Tick-born illnesses to recognize that their might actually be some validity to a disease that has only been around for the past 50 years. I hope your buddy makes it out alive. For the record, Lymes Disease can be combated, however, depending upon the co-infections it can quite resilient because its so progressive. Even when combated within the hour with the {antidote} (I use the term loosely) Doxcycyline its still not a solution. I was tested and "treated" within the hour in Lyme, CT with Doxycyline and a few other meds, however I still test positive for it today 7 1/2 years later.

I'd like to see a documentary on drug laws around the world compared to the US. From the decriminalization in Portugal to the super harsh laws in Singapore, Malaysia and others. Fair comparison of the good and bad of decriminalizing drugs. Effects of rehabilitation centers and education of drugs compared to prisons being populated by drug users, traffickers, and cultivators. Also just for fun, throw in something about big pharmaceutical companies, especially ones like Purdue.

I'd do a documentary on six people - three that are in the lower income class, and three that are from the upper class. It would be a completely neutral study on daily life and what correlations can be made based on income level.
I would want to do this to clear any ideas or conceptions people had about each other. It seems classes stigmatize each other a great deal about things that may or may not be true. I believe a documentary like this would allow people to indulge in seeing truth in action: how people live their lives. Interacting with family, showing us what their greatest struggles usually are, telling us about their political and spiritual beliefs, and most importantly, how they view the opposite group (and why, but that's up to the viewer).

I'd like to do (and am doing, actually) a doc about animal hoarding, specifically dogs and horses. It's one thing to hoard stuff - yes having too much stuff can kill you, but it's another thing to hoard animals who are dependent on us for their care and feeding. To hoard animals and to think that you are the only savior for these animals is truly a disservice to them. It's egotistical, narcissistic and dangerous. The world is overrun with animals yet some people think they want to breed their own, which end up in shelters and feedlots.

Well, I would first like to do a documentary on pot prohibition. Yes, I know it's cliche, but I want to document it from a social aspect. Get out and ask people on the street, talk to real people, and get their perspective.
Another documentary I would like to do is about teenagers. How do social networks affect our youth? What has the internet really done to change children from decades past? What are their concerns in the present day? I really want to get in the psyche of these kids and get a feel for where the future of our world is headed.
Finally, I would like to document the underbelly of government corruption. Broken into 3 parts: The Megaphone, The Machine, and The Megalomaniacs.
Part 1: The Megaphone talks about the media which is the supporting arm of government suppression and how it works to distract and obscure the truth.
Part 2: The Machine is referring to the government itself, and the levels of corruption that occur in the halls of Congress, the House of Representatives, and the White House.
Part 3: The Megalomaniacs is about the corporations that actually influence and run the government behind the scenes through control of the money flow.

I'd create a documentary on how the richest country in the world has so many citizens struggling with hunger. Millions of adults and children are forced to go without food for several meals, or even days. According to "Feeding America" in 2009, 50.2 million Americans lived in food insecure households. We always seem to talk about obesity in the news but how often to we acknowledge that many U.S. citizens can't afford food?

Our kids. The future of our country and many other countries are our kids. If we don't find ways to get them the right education and proper nutrition, the elite will be the only ones that will have a chance at everything, while many more will have to settle for nothing.
My documentary would focus on the so called "millions and billions of aid" that are so called "distributed" to our kids and why they are not making any changes.
How can we continue to aid other countries, when we can can't help ourselves?
How can the country continue to spend BILLIONS on war machines, but no enough to help the poor?
How can the people of this country continue to spend on corporations that don't help our kids, but continue to ROB US of our basic needs??
My documentary would be based on our future, our light, our kids.

So many to choose from...hmmm.
I would like to expose corporate media. People often speculate that they're told what to air, or what to print by the government. I think ratings, and human nature plays a bigger, role, but I want to expose why the cover some stories and not others.
I want to follow an important story from source to finish, and find out why certain subjects are canned in various media outlets.
Why is it in the US, the media fails to report on some things, but elsewhere in the world, it's spread all over the place, in multiple countries. Also, I'd like to uncover the causes, and consequences of Political News (commentary).
For those who want their viewers to believe their lies by calling it news, but for legal purposes they call themselves "commentators", not news. -Yet NEWS is in their name.
I want to expose to the world, that they are anything but fair and balanced. I want to point out the extremes they go to in order to get viewers on their side. - 2 years ago

I'd like to see a documentary on why green energy isn't taking off like it should.
Wind, wave, sea, and geothermal energy generation are mature technologies that we've been using for decades on large and small scales and yet we're STILL heavily reliant on fossil and nuclear generation.
We know that efficiencies are not has high with renewable sources, and storage is always an issue in that regard- but this is offset but the non-existent ongoing cost of resource supply and end of life cleanup costs, unlike those that bedevil traditional sources.
Replacing existing infrastructure is expensive- but many communities and corporations around the world have shown willingness to absorb those costs in the face of the climate change issue.
The costs of installing equipment for renewable power generation on an individual household level would be a lot cheaper if there was a larger economy of scale (mass production of solar cells, wind turbines etc.), but this just doesn't happen. What is REALLY keeping renewable energy down?

I would like to see a documentary done on money. The monetary system is one of the only institutions that humans do not question. There are several attempts to make improvements, but this is all for a broken system. However, I do not wish to see what has already been covered in docs like The Ascent of Money and Zeitgeist: Addendum. What I am looking for is how 5% of the world's population is able to consume 30% of the world's resources, without feeling much guilt about it. The United States and other developed nations are exploiting this planet's resources. I want to see how middle class family in Nebraska, Idaho, Ohio, or Arkansas can have an effect on a poor family in Nigeria, Turkey, Thailand or Venezuela. At the same time, I'd like to see how a rich community in Egypt, India, Brazil or South Africa feels about relations with the United States.
If all the money was burnt up, Wall Street and all stock markets were closed down, the corrupt politicians thrown out, and commerce as we know it was halted, would life be able to continue? Would the Earth quit its orbit around the Sun? Would the Sun itself die out? If the answer is no, then why must we lose civility when the economies of the world collapse? People often speak of revolution as if it can be carried out swiftly. What I would like to have answered is how the monetary system itself must be reevaluated & realigned with the laws of nature and the values of all mankind, before we can begin to hope for real progress.
I want to people to appreciate the real relationship we have with each other, the plant and animal life, and everything else on this planet---all through the basic day-to-day commerce. When I use the words "appreciate" and "relationship", I do not mean the neat little facts. Rather, I would like the reality of the situation, from the collective to the individual level. Lets examine the wealth, prestige, and power of people. With religion being so prominent in the world, it can be quite surprising to witness such a vast amount of injustice and cruelty; all in the name of profit.

About the child abuse that goes on silently in many American homes. From the richest emotional abuse to the poorest physical abuse. That's the worst ongoing horror going on daily, on every street. Children are being tortured in varying degrees, by their own parents. The reports we hear in the news are sooo the tip of the iceberg.

I would make a documentary about the disservice we do the people of the United States by half teaching history, lying about history, and how it adversely effects the majority of the citizens of the United States.

The spread of civil unrest throughout the world by the masses ... The link to Wikileaks Anon and the spread of fascism undetected through the govts of the world changing American Policy and media etc etc how the corporate manipulation of elections pop culture and why its not working and people are over throwing their plutocracy's with no real media coverage or encouragement why the medias pushing monarchy's and puppet govts why they disdain the truth and why "YOU" have reported us nothing yes you PBS you missed the ball on Tunisia...you know it! also why the reserved response to Muslim nations fighting for democracy if there ever was a reason for all of us to be behind something unless of coarse the spread of freedom and democracy scares you only through invasion and war is it okay ...WHY! Why are we not in support of what could upset tolittarian regimes and religious fanaticism in the middle east I think its obvious isn't it how many lives and billions we could save if people in these terroristic nations gained their freedom by their own means

A comparison of the quality of public school K-12 education on a state-by-state basis coupled with an analysis of how each state determines funding levels for its various school districts. I am concerned about the enormity of the issues facing the next several generations and whether young people will be equipped to deal with them.

I would focus on the story of migrant workers in several countries, maybe picking an Indian construction worker working in Dubai, a Mexican farm worker in California, and a rural Chinese person struggling to make it in one of the vast metropolises there, showing the issues they face, how they are similar and different.

The reality of out-of-control population and in-sustainability of humans breeding like cockroaches. My first choice would be the lie people call religion, but most people are too narcissistic, irrational and egotistical to let go of the possibility of life after death.

I'd make a documentary about the reliability of getting your information from documentaries. I focus on several issues within various documentaries. First I'd compare the main opinion or claim made by various films to the information provided to substantiate that claim. I would then compare the info gathered from film to as many pieces of scientific literature I could find. Lastly I'd have a sit down with as many professionals of that topic or thesis and just let them talk to one another.
