If you could enact and enforce one environmental regulation, what would it be?
We read this week that one year after the Deepwater Horizon oil well explosion that crippled the Gulf of Mexico, not one new piece of legislation related to oil drilling has been passed.
We've also learned that the EPA's ability to enforce the Clean Air Act is under attack, thanks to a budget proposal that would slash its funding.
Yet, when it comes to removing gray wolves from the endangered species list, politicians seem all too eager to act.
Since legislators don't seem to be able to get it right, we'll ask a simple question this Earth Day: If you could enact and enforce one environmental regulation, what would it be?

I want P&C to take back all our packaging, and they can sort it out. I would be willing to pay a fee for this. The store is within walking distance , the dump isn't. Yes we recycle, and yes I buy products in as little waste as possible. But a lot of our waste should be considered by our community supermarkets. Just saying, putting it out there to open it for discussion.

All forms of energy extraction, shipping, storage and distribution would have licenses for each and each means. Each of these licenses would have ultimate guidelines for safety. Violate one of those guidelines, you loose that license. Forever.
So, for example, B.P. could no longer drill for oil, nor could Exxon ship it by ocean tanker. Nor could their subsidiaries.

An act I would enact:
For every $1.00 oil companies receive in tax breaks or other forms of government largesse, $3.00 must be invested in clean, renewable energy.

Public ownership of all natural resources of the land (water, minerals, forests, etc). They belong to the people, not to the corporations. There should be a democratic decision-making process controlling how we use and export our country's natural resources. The proceeds of these publicly controlled resources should then be used to balance our budget and lower overall taxes.

Tax breaks for companies that R&D solar, wind, and other renewable energy sources, as either city-wide power plants, as something for individual homes or individual cars.
Additional tax breaks if they get a product to market.
Increase taxes on fossil fuel companies to compensate for any lost revenue.

Enact a law that gives the ecosystem that we depend on for life, the same rights to protection of life, as humans.
Killing a complex ecosystem is a more evil and far-reaching act than killing a single human being.
Let the laws reflect the real basis and reality of life on this planet--not some ancient egocentric fantasy. - 1 year ago

Simply require all corporations to bear the cost of disposing the waste associated with their products.
How many plastic wrappers come out of your factories? You get to pay for their clean up through a tax.
How many tons of carbon do you emit? You have to pay for offsets.
That seems pretty easy.

I am with you on that. Here in Oregon our legislature wants to increase the amount of ethanol in our gas from 10% to 15%. I just prematurely blew up my chainsaw, very possibly due to having run ethanol gas in it before we knew how bad it was for 2 cycle engines.

Yes. And we should pass a law that says we can not engage in any war without special funding provisions that will directly and explicitly pay for it. Any war that is worth fighting is worth the commitment of its people to pay for it.
