Would you want to live forever?

Humanity has always longed for immortality, but should we abandon our quest? British political philosopher John Gray suggests in his new book that we should, and learn how to embrace our mortality.

Would you want to live forever?

    • I would not like to live forever. It is disappointing that all the measure to lengthen our life span seem to make us live through more elder years. I wouldn't mind if my body were in the same condition it was when I was 40. Maybe 40 or 50 years living like that would be great--old enought to have learned a few things, young enough to enjoy them. I do not want to exist for 10 to 20 years sleeping my days away.

    • Maybe not forever, but a couple thousand years would be nice.

Personally, I think biology is over rated. Before the end of this century we will probably evolve to merge with our technology. It's inevitable. Resistance is futile :)

    • We have already beat greater than lottery type odds to be here. We have to learn how to appreciate more, this little gift we have. Life is about life. Death is only the unavoidable conclusion.

. . . .but,.....but,.....you would get to mock the X (s) ; you know,....poke "granny" with a stick,.... the "na na na " principle. But I'm sure it WOULD loose its charm,.....perhaps not quite as fast as they did.

      "Standing At The Edge"

      We're standing on the edge
On the edge of time, on the edge of time
And it is dark, it is dark, it is dark
It is dark, so dark on the edge of time
And we're tired of making love
We are the lost, we are the ravaged
      We are the unkind
We are the soldiers at the edge of time
And we're tired of making love
      Where are our children?
      Where are our fathers?
      Where is our desire?
And it's cold, so cold on the edge of time
      Where is our joy?
      Where is our hope?
      Where is our fire?

And it's cold, so cold on the edge of time
      We are the lost,
      We are the forgotten
      We are the undying
We are the soldiers at the edge of time
The veterans of a thousand psychic wars
We are the soldiers at the edge of time
The victims of the savage truth
We are the soldiers at the edge of time
      And we're tired, we're tired,
      We're tired, we're tired,
      We're tired of making love

heh. ( just not really that much of a "cat person". )

“I love the orange ones! They let me see through my hand!”
~ Oscar Wilde on kitten huffing

Note: GOVERNMENT WARNING: According to the Surgeon General, the use of kitten huffing impairs your ability to drive a car or operate machinery, and may cause health problems

Kitten huffing is a controversial practice that has recently been growing as a popular alternative to street drugs. Despite a long history in Western culture, the practice remains largely taboo. Excessive huffing has been known to produce undesirable side effects, and kitten-related human fatalities. Even unapologetically frequent huffers caution against using more than two or three kittens per day.

The 'cupped hands approach', developed by the Marquess of Queensberry as a remedy for the pain of head injuries sustained while boxing, has come to be the dominant huffing technique in Europe and the Americas. Other techniques are generally avoided by all but expert huffers and even experts tend to avoid techniques involving rolled up dollar bills, as the kittens tend to clog. Kittens that have already been huffed are referred to as "Depleted". Long-term storage or disposal of depleted kittens has posed a problem for some urban areas. Contrary to popular belief, however, depleted kittens are not permanently depleted, as the actual soul regenerates the protective layer which actually inspires euphoria every year, although the actual rate of regeneration varies from breed to bread (sourdough appears to be the most forgiving).

    • Living forever could be one hell of a curse. Imagine aging forever! But if you could stay young as well as be invulnerable to disease and injury, it could be fun. If/when the rest of you poor saps die off, I'm confident I could amuse myself indefinitely, or at least until Earth falls into the sun...
Though I'd rather take a spaceship and explore the solar system (with a friend) for 10 years or so at light speed so I could come back to a world that is 100 years older than the one I left.

Hanging out with vamps could be fun and I like the "extra powers" idea but there's at least one major flaw with turning vamp. Two things all vampire stories agree on is that vampires have heightened senses, and the need to consume human blood to survive. The flaw is the fact that I would have to experience life in so much more detail than I ever could as a human but I would be forced to destroy it in order to exist. So unless telepathy is one of the "extra powers", (so I could eat only evil-doers) the trade off would not be worth it.

    • NO. NO. Hell No. and in case you missed it, NO!

After all, to the well-organized mind, death is but the next great adventure.

    • immortality is futile since you can still die in an accident, but I would REALLY REALLY REALLY like it , if we didn't have to reach old age so soon. 300 years would be a satisfying amt of time for me if, and only if, we didn't have to age...... I'd rather just drop dead when the time's up instead of withering away in a state of decomposition....
