What is transportation like in your city?
City transportation can be hectic, loud, hot and smelly - choice adjectives people have used to describe their daily commutes. Pod car systems like the Personal Rapid Transit, or PRT, would eliminate many of the headaches faced by urban commuters by providing quiet, electric, single passenger pods designed to save time and energy.

How would you describe transportation in your city?

Public transportation in my city is pretty awesome, but driving your own car and parking is a big to do. I'm lucky that I don't need a car, but once leaving, I'm kind of up the creek. Pod cars would be a cool way to solve some transportation issues.

Where I live it is far from urban. We do have companies that run small buses, private companies getting subsidized by the local govt. These are the mainstay of Seniors that do not drive. Traffic is comprised of mini-vans and bloatmobiles flitting back and forth from schools to McMansion parks and shopping centres. I myself am a senior biker (as in motorcycle) as long as there is no snow.

In my rural/suburban mixed area the small buses seem to be doing a good job. I would like to see them reach more areas and in addition use more fuel efficient vehicles. The smaller buses used are probably the best solution as we have a lot of back roads branching off from the highways.

Nonexistent.
Finland has pretty shitty transportation options wherever you go outside of the capital, but in my region it's particularly terrible. The local bus cartel basically decided to start raising prices and when people stopped using the buses, they decided to reduce the number of lines to cut losses, followed by even less use of buses, followed by prices being raised even more to make up for the lessened profits.
So now taking a bus out to a location 67km away costs 12.8 €. With that I can get 8 liters of gasoline... That allows me to drive for around 114 km, so I can almost make it there and back with the price of going there one way. Now remind me, why exactly would I ever choose a bus? Even a child ticket costs 6.4 €.

That sounds pretty bad. Are the buses gas, electric or hybrid? Are there any other means of transportation like trains or are they strictly in the city?

DominicBlackwellCooper:
Diesel and gasoline. The buses are mostly diesel. Not a single electric, natural gas or hybrid bus to be found.
A train to the same location costs 7.3 €, that's about 35 cents cheaper than going by car. What a bargain! I get to not take much of anything with me AND I get to walk anywhere I want to go AND I still need to drive the 5 km to the closest station... And would you look at that, when you add that expense, the cost is now more than just driving there.
This area isn't all that densely populated so I can see somewhat increased costs, but when a single passenger can pay for the fuel and a large portion of the driver's salary, something is VERY wrong.

I agree, that is very expensive. Does your government have any plans to make public transportation changes? I'm so surprised that Finland should have such limited choices and at such a high cost for its citizens. Perhaps it's time to buy electric scooters or bicycles, or does the climate prohibit that?

we are a small drinking town with a fishing problem. So we have a lot of drunks driving around. I see a lot of folks on bikes not because they are trying to help the ecosystem but because they have no drivers licence due to DUI's. We have no local mass transit But they have a bus system in the big city of Corpus Christi.

NYC mass transit is a mixed bag. When it's running well you're astonished at how well they can move millions of people, so swiftly. When it's not running well it's a crowded, smelly, disorganized mess. Therfore my mass transportation system gets a B - . Not terrible, but not on the honor roll either.

NYC Mass transit is some of the best in the world...yes it is congested and yes it gets messy...but where in the world can you get from point A to point B for less than three bucks!
Would like to see a more personal transit system put in place, but i know it will not happen in my life time...just look how long it is taking to get the 2nd Avenue subway line up and running.

Getting around San Francisco is pretty simple for me, and I'm lucky that I can use the rail systems and don't have to deal with the bus. Traffic is usually horrendous and being able to sit back and not have to worry about any of that frees up a lot of time that I'd otherwise have to spend sitting on a congested street. The cost of crossing the bridge by car is a good chunk of my fare, too, so getting to and from work is a real bargain. The other benefit is that my fuel and maintenance costs for my car are really, really low.

Transportation in NYC is all what you make of it. I know people that only walk or take subways and busses to save money. Then you have people who never take the subway and prefer cabs because they want personal space. You just have to accept that it's congested in most places and then deal with it whichever way works best.

Traffic in DC is terrible--usually LA and DC compete for the worst traffic in the country. The metro runs frequently during rush hour and less frequently on the weekends. If you live close to a stop, great, but the system is not as extensive as NYC by any means. There are a lot of buses in areas that are not served by the metro, even in the suburbs. There are some new dedicated bike lanes and trails, but drivers around here do not pay enough attention to cyclists on the road. You are basically risking your life out there on a bike during rush hour!

The Philippines is the worst when it comes to traffic. On certain days you are allowed to drive your car only if you license plate ends with certain numbers. The lines on the street that separates on-coming traffic is used only as a suggestion. LA drivers have it the best in terms of road conditions. They're are just the dumbest and most incompetent drivers in the world!! I wished they had Carmegeddon every month. That was the best day I had driving in this city!!

LA definitely doesn't compare to the transportation systems elsewhere. A lot of people complain about how crappy it is here but compared to 20 years ago, we're miles ahead. They have put in several bike lanes around Manhattan the problem is, the bikers refuse to obey the laws. I can't tell you how many times I've almost been mowed down by a bicyclist who thinks it's all about them on the road. Finally the police have started cracking down on them and they have been far less reckless, but I can't tell you how many bike/ car accidents occur because a biker was not obeying the rules of the road. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for biking, however bikers should be forced to take safety classes before they ride in traffic.

In San Francisco, there's a lot of public transit, but reliability is a huge problem. It's almost never on schedule. Cars work pretty well, except that parking is nearly as expensive as in Manhattan. Bikes, motocycles and scooters seem to be the way to go. Lots of parking, splitting lanes is legal in California and you look cool.

Thanks for commenting. What are some other innovations you would like to see in the future for Urban Mobility? As we wrap up this season's segment we'd love to hear our audience's ideas on this week's BFD page: http://current.com/bfd/93466792_what-new-trends-do-you-see-for-urban-mobility.ht...

no doubt i am sure. so the next time you hypocritically whine about rich americans not taking care of their own and generously donating to help out a troubled world remember that the usa leads all nations in helping out with charity at home and in the rest of the worlds undeserving cesspools. i hope you are also a man of charity and not just a big talker. walk the talk my uninformed friend

In LA it is a Car only culture, I would welcome a true subway alternative but that is years away. Thanks to Big Oil, Goodyear and Big Auto who bought the train companies under a shell company and shut them down

Living in Los Angeles, there is no "true" form of mass transit (unlike many of the major east coast cities), so everyone drives. In a city with a population of nearly 10 million people - you can only IMAGINE the amount of time stuck in traffic!

Public Transportation in NYC is awesome. I would, however, like to create a program for Pedestrians who could learn a thing or two about how to navigate the city. I’d call it PedEd. :)

I've spent some time in NYC, and I agree, you folks have the speed-walking thing down to a science! Just think of all the calories you burn dodging the sight seers.
