What steps should the U.S. take to curb outsourcing?
President Obama has called on businesses to bring jobs home for the sake of the economy during an "Insourcing American Jobs" forum:
"I'm calling on those businesses that haven't brought jobs back to take this opportunity to get the American people back to work," Obama said in prepared remarks. "That's how we'll rebuild an economy where hard work pays off and responsibility is rewarded -- and a nation where those values live on."
But outsourcing continues to be attractive to companies that can hire labor more cheaply and offers the ability to shelter profits made overseas from U.S. taxes.
What steps should the U.S. take to get companies to bring jobs back to America and curb outsourcing?

Big tax breaks for companies that set up shop in America. No tax breaks for companies that send our jobs overseas!!! It is a no brainer!!!

People have to start supporting businesses that do act responsibly, remain based in their community and employ local people. American products have had a long tradition of quality, offering superior value, function and durability over cheaper products manufactured off-shore using unskilled labour and low tech equipment. A good quality local product not only lasts longer while out performing low cost imitations, you know that the workers who made it were not chained to work benches or subjected to unacceptable pay and hazardous conditions.
The media and the public should endeavour to educate their communities about manufacturers and how their products are made. People should know about the working conditions many face in these off-shore manufacturing plants. People should also be educated about quality over quantity and how much their community is benefited by spending money at locally owned and operated businesses. We should all get to know our local businesses and lend our support where we can.
You may be able to purchase a product over the internet at a cheaper price than your local store, but what if purchasing locally for a little extra money kept someone employed. Perhaps that employee may spend money at your business, money they may not have if instead everyone living locally was to buy their goods online from out-of-town locations. There will always be products that local shops don't stock, but if you ask about these products you at least help inform them about interests and demand. Rampant online consumption can leave you feeling unfulfilled with your purchase, but local shopping allows you to sample, feel or test a product, and leaves you with the knowledge you are doing a little to help your community.
Essential to the continued operation of local businesses is support from both public and media in times of trouble. If a business is being stood over by corrupt bureaucrats or powerful competing interests (these often go hand-in-hand with one another), it is of the utmost importance that the surrounding community stand against such criminal anticompetitive behaviour and help garner as much media exposure as possible. If communities fail to act when corruption first shows it's ugly face, this disease often becomes entrenched. Corruption destroys or stifles businesses, harming the prosperity and growth of the entire community in the process. Small business needs an equal footing and room to grow if it is to reach it's potential and deliver the full benefit to the community that it is capable of. People often do not risk to dream again if they are dealt a harsh, undeserved and unjustified blow that renders their years of effort null and void.

the American compaPhilosophical12b I thought I was clear about this (you should shorten your name) How would you like a company like GE having no US employees? Every worker for for GE lives and works in China. GE can mke a lot more money screwing us and as a bonus they won't have to deal with minimumwage issues. The bosses of GE will live here and collect money with out having to pay for security against angry under paid employees. If they want to sell in this country they should have to produce in this country...or pay a fine or an import tax...idiot

The "US" isn't going to do anything, the "US" is run by corporate America. The only thing that can be done on any of these economic fronts is massive boycotts throughout the country. Corporations are in effect robbing this country with offshore banking as a means of not even paying taxes on profits. Jobs? please, maybe when Wall St crashes and wages go down to nothing will jobs come back here. We are so screwed now and we can't even do anything about it cause there's no united front to fix it. OWS is a start but not the fix. We have to take the money away from the lobbyists, the bankers, the politicians and the militarized police. We have to act in unison, you know the old saying.

Im trying to get people to choose local grocery stores, clothing stores, hardware stores and so on INSTEAD of going to Walmart for everything. It's insideous--onve WallyWorld came to my small town, small local biz is dissapearing daily. Mom and Pop stores just cant compete. Lowe's and Walmart are the two top employers, now---in fact, folks here say, "Mam...if you dont work at Walmart...you dont work, at all."

it's simple, if you don't make it here you don't sell it here! Any company outsourcing Jobs will lose it's ability to do business here in this country. Then the Government can start up it's own company to replace the one who can no longer do business here. For Us By Us!

I have heard the argument that tariffs would discourage other countries from buying American manufactured goods. I have just never been able to figure out what manufactured goods they're talking about.

Phase out NAFTA, CAFTA and every other trade agreement that does nothing to benefit anyone but create profits for corporations at the expense of our environment and the peoples of those countries and Americans.

"resign"? and let Joe Biden be President?
Look....in EVERY election, the choices are between Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. Voters have to choose which candidate eis the LEAST cartoonish. You may not like Obama....but compared to ANY Republican, he's the ONLY choice. Unless, of course, you
have a few million bucks. - 4 months ago

Voters must try and hold all politicians accountable all of the time. Quite often figure heads are used to distract the public, while bills crafted by lobby groups are slipped through without scarcely any public exposure. The mainstream media often fails at keeping tabs on current and proposed legislation, along with sneaky amendments and wording, then falls flat on it's face when it comes to widely publicising this news to it's viewers.
People need to hold Obama to his word within reason, but no one should take their eye's and ears off congress either. The American Congress has a lot to answer for, as it has continued to disrupt and interfere with the workings of government for reasons of political gain, while ignoring the detrimental effect this has had on the American economy and prosperity of all. Sabotage of your political rival's policy, especially while they hold office, harms the entire system. It's like cutting off your nose to spite your own face. The world moves too quickly in these modern times to make up later for any economic or political damage you have committed against your own country in a vain attempt to hamper your adversary.
Much more can be accomplished when people choose to work together and compromise. Even when actions benefit your rivals you may discover you have also benefited yourself. Government is supposed to help the people, not spend it's time bickering and fighting like unruly children. Surely that is not too much to expect from those given a rather well resourced chance to help their society?

It was a foul Australian politician who first started sprooking Free-Trade in Australian parliament sometime early last century. I've forgotten his name, but he also backed keeping all the wealth in the hands of the elite and was an ardent racist who often used vulgar cartoons along with stereotyping to depict Japanese as sub-human at his little social gatherings. He publicly claimed Free-Trade would make people around the world more equal, while he privately conspired to create a framework that would funnel the world's resources to the established elite. He reportedly joked that the common person would be better served if they were secretly controlled by a powerful few as they were incapable of understanding what was in their best interests.

1. Campaign to buy American [you've gotta have a market]
2. Any company that moves hdqtrs outside of America loses citizenship, right to do business in U.S.
3. Currencies are allowed to float and not controlled as in China.
4. Phase out NAFTA
5. Emphasize quality control is best here in U.S., less shipping costs.
6. Combine automation and advance technology to provide quality, competitive unit costs.Perhaps as many as 10 million jobs have been lost due to the export of some 60,000 factories nationwide.
Here's a list of companies responsible for "Exporting America" These are U.S. companies either sending American jobs overseas, or choosing to employ cheap overseas labor, instead of American workers. http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/lou.dobbs.tonight/popups/exporting.america/conte... - 4 months ago

I agree, but for the first time in years, I feel SOME hope. The OCCUPY movement has served to restore my faith, to a great degree. Evolution is NOT gradual---things stay the same, then SUDDENLY make a leap foreward. I believe this is what is happenning, globally. ONE guy sets himself on fire and thousands, all over the planet suddenly wake up and say, "FUCK THIS SHIT!" I believe 2012 will be the Year of Awakening.

Philosophical12b:
Current economic circumstances were likely caused partly by design. By moving or withholding capital, powerful entities can devalue their competitors, increase debt, then seed fear and panic among people for having dared to speak up and question the seemingly unquenchable corporate greed that has been on display for far too long. Not everything went to plan, suddenly the number of people applying for credit dropped. Everyone was supposed to carry on rampantly consuming the latest goods on offer. Something went wrong. People began acting satisfied with what they had, others realised that purchasing new and expensive things was not making them happy. They tried increasing the fear. More people began acting strangely, they were questioning the values and direction of international markets, banks and their own governments. They decided to keep the pressure on, they could out wait the public and at the same time snap up assets for cheap prices as their owners faltered under the weight of a dried up cash flow. They can wait, they have already been waiting and planning for a very long time. They'll wait until any opposition grows tired, relaxes, let them think they've won a small victory, then pull the rug out from under their feet to expose the awaiting trap.

Yes. We also need to ADD to our rhetoric the term, "UN-AMERICAN" to reference the practice of outsourcing. There is NOTHING more ANTI-America that paying non-Americans to do American jobs.

Tie tax incentives to hiring at home.
Also, start a propaganda campaign similar to how the auto industry shamed people from buying foreign cars, forcing foreign manufacturers to build plants in America. - 4 months ago
