How can the success of the SOPA blackout be measured? Was it effective?

Wikipedia, Reddit and other sites went dark to protest anti-piracy bills SOPA and PIPA. Already, three co-sponsors of the bills have withdrawn support.

But what's the best way to measure the effectiveness of the blackout? Was it an effective method of demonstrating opposition to the bills?

    • The real success is the way Americans can join together on a specific issue. Regardless of their political, religious views, gender, age, race. We do not have to agree on everything but when we agree on a specific issue we must speak up.

    • Not only was it effective, I thought the reactions from so many people happened rather quickly.

Most of the people (that I shared the links regarding SOPA with) weren't aware of it, but reacted quickly by signing the petitions -- once they had the necessary info -- to make that important decision.

    • It was absolutely a success...but only a first step.

The blackout, IMHO, drew attention to the issue of democracy/free speech on the internet. For many people, it was probably not even on their radar until the blackout. Because the blackout drew coverage by the major news outlets, more people have at least heard of the issue and the legislation.

The challenge now will be to educate. We now know a HUGE number of people want an open internet. We have to educate to grow that number. ;)
