Should debate audiences be allowed to cheer?
Newt Gingrich doesn't want debate moderators silencing the crowds at his debates.
"We're going to serve notice on future debates," Gingrich told Fox News. "We're just not going to allow that to happen. That's wrong. The media doesn't control free speech. People ought to be allowed to applaud if they want to."
Regardless of whether you agree with Newt's positions or motivation, do you think audiences should be allowed to cheer at debates? Does audience reaction interfere with the responses?

absolutely not. I am sick and tired of these fools being prompted by daily polls and pundits. We need to make these people stand and deliver their own ideas not ideas that are trending or being supported by the audience. A person that does not have their own convictions will be a pawn to whatever voice they hear at the time and be virtue cannot be depended upon to carry through on their term.

I think audience reaction should be allowed, especially in GOP debates so the rest of America can see how moronic and despicable they are.

why are we turning debates into a talk show atmosphere. I don't see it as appropriate but that's me...

i totally agree with barbara. it's the geraldo riverization of american politics. so sad, uncivil, uniformed. our society has become way too CRASS. freedom of speech does not need to translate to idiocy and lack of consideration.

If it's a debate, sure, why not. I wouldn't call what the Republicans are doing a debate though. The things that are being cheered are giving us a good idea what makes up their support.

No. And if that Gingrich creep won't debate, tell him that's fine. See how long he'll stay away.

Why audiences in the first place? I say let them go at it Charlie Rose style, around the table, with no backdrop, and one serious questioner.

These debates are a joke, they're just "reality" tv. The moderators aren't pushing to get anything serious out of these people.

In republican debates specifically the audience should be allowed to bring small fire arms to show their support of a candidate. Evertime a candidate makes a hypocritical point about one another the audience could fire into the air. The Yosemite Sam response.

no....then they're 'performing' for the audience in studio, which influences the viewing audience....have them do it c-span style: moderator and the two debaters....no audience needed....

I think so. It has given us a look into the minds of the conservative base.
