Should family be off limits in a political campaign?

On Wednesday, Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen said that Ann Romney couldn't understand economic issues because she has "never worked a day in her life." The comment spurred swift backlash -- from both sides.

Obama campaign manager Jim Messina tweeted: "I could not disagree with Hilary Rosen any more strongly. Her comments were wrong and family should be off limits. She should apologize."

Romney has been dispatched on the campaign trail recently to try to improve her husband's image among women voters. The Romney campaign has called her its secret weapon.

Romney responded to Rosen on Fox News, saying, "My career choice was to be a mother. We have to respect women and all those choices that they make."

Should family be off limits in a political campaign? Should Ann Romney face the same scrutiny as her husband?

    • Of course not. It is the price you pay.

Can I be a scuba diver and not run the risk of drowning?

It's all or nothing in a Presidential race.

    • No, family members ultimately become part of the office if elected. In this case, Ann does not have the right to judge anyone's comments; the woman has how big a staff? Mothering under priviledged circumstances is a far cry from raising a family in or near poverty. How dare she declare with such glee an early birthday present.

    • Generally, family members should be shown some humility, but when they make political statements we should be able to scrutinize them. Fact is, Ann Romney have always had the LUXURY of making choices. Many women do not have the LUXURY of choice!! I work because I have too!! I also have to take care of my kids!! Given the choice I would love to spend my days at the spa!! And even when I get the time to go to the spa, and can afford it at the same time...chances are the effing car breaks and I have to choose fix car over spa!!! Arent choices great???!

    • Hilary Rosen spoke a truth. How many working mothers married or single can identify with Ann Romney? Hilary Rosen did not criticicize Mrs Romney's choice to be a stay at home mom. Truth is volatile in this society of notorious media demagogues.

And where is the evidence to support Ann Romney's ability to relate to working class American mothers when her husband clearly does not.

    • If the family member puts herself in front of the public, as Mrs. Romney has, then I believe that she has made herself part of the conversation.

    • Absolutely not. ESPECIALLY if the person brands themselves as a 'family man' of 'family values' blah blah blah that horseshit nonsense they always talk about. If that's what they're touting then the family is not only NOT off limits but they need to be scrutinized even more than a regular candidate to make sure they're living up to their family values, family man lifestyle. For instance: Sarah Palin runs on a family values abstinence for teen sex platform and her daughter get's preg before marriage as a teen. WHITE FLAG, you're automatically out of the race because your family didn't live up to the standards you SAID you wanted everyone else in this country to become. If your daughter doesn't even see you as a realistic authority figure to respect you then why should I as a voter?

Now if they run, as I would, on a platform of private life and it not being anyone's business what I do in my house or with my family THEN the family is off limits.

    • An element of society has to see if a "Wet Paint" sign is true and test it. Barring family from discussions is like a red flag to a bullish individual or media, and promotes a greater likelyhood of going against any ban and an inane list of excuses to do so.

    • That depends, if it is a democrat or progressive family they are fair game. (just ask Michelle Obama), A republican family on the other hand, don't go there or foxnews and wolf blitzer will be all over you.

    • I never worked out of my home until I was 37 - making a choice to be a mother first. Howver this did not make me econimically stunted. In fact I helped my husband start his business and was totally involved in the economics of life etc. I was then able to start my own successful tourism business when I was 42 and never had a problem with understanding the economy. What a naive, uneducated and riduculous statement by Hilary Rosen. Working in the home often equips one far better with a knowledge of the economy than being in the traditional work place.

I have no doubt that you learned a lot from your experiences, however, I doubt Ms. Romney had the same experiences. I would imagine that Mr. Romney rarely, if ever, discussed his businesses with his wife and I would think that Ms. Romney had household staff so did she really work in the home?

I admit my ignorance of the Romney household activities make me unqualified to question Ms. Romney's knowledge and actions but simple logic causes me to think her life was much different from yours.

    • Has Ann Romney ever worked outside of the home (not that homemaking isn't an honorable job)? Does she have a household staff? If she has worked outside of the home, how would working a day job give her an understanding of economics? Are people angry with Hilary Rosen because she told the truth, or lied, about Ann Romney's work record, or are they angry with her because she's foolish enough to think that people with jobs understand economics? Ann Romney is on the campaign trail to help her husbands image with women? How does that work? Yes my husband is trying to take away the rights you have gained in the last 50 years, but don't worry, I'm a woman and I can tell you he's an okay guy.

    • let me rephrase Family members under the age of 18 should be off limits, in other words, minor children should be off limits. those adult family members involed in the political campaign are fair game. "If you can't stand the heat..."

    • Family members that remain out of the public eye should remain out of the conversation. If a family member chooses to campaign for the candidate then they make themselves fair game for whatever happens.

    • I would say yes, family should be off limits. But as has been pointed out here, once that family member opens the door by being involved in the process/campaign, then they can/should be open to criticism. That said there should be limits. Talking about ones looks and or appearences ( Michelle Obama) takes it a bit too far. Unless we are talking of Callista Gingrich, (sorry, she can be rather scary).

    • Ideally, yes. Our press is shameless, and they want rating, 'cause ratings = $$$ whether that's the network selling ads, or the reporters climbing up the chain to a higher paying gig. So it would be nice for the family to be off limits, but our press all took some cues from the National Enquirer's big sales in the 70' and 80's, and anyone and anything is fair game.

When the family member sticks their nose into the political fray they make themselves a target. If Romney wants to stay home and take care of her children, that's her business . But when she steps out on that stage and makes political statements , she is part of the process and subject to the same scrutiny as her husband. Poor little rethug, can dish out the criticism but cries like a stuck pig when she gets some back. If she can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen, she put herself there, no one else.

    • Anyone gets near my family, I set the dogs on em,.....then I get ol' moose eye my double barrel .

    • Now if you want to go after the Romney granddad then that is fair. Leave the country to keep collecting wives so you can populate the nearest plant and send star babies back to earth is worth reporting. Mormons are running a campaign that claims all these wonderful people of all colors are happy MORMONS we need to tell the real story. Hot under the collar you bet I live on a MORMON street one block from a tab and apple stake house....

    • yes and no. Once they come at your family then may the ancestors chew them up and create a new pile of crap. if the blathering media follows the cross over then we really need to declare war. I am sick and tired of the pot shots at Michelle and the girls should be no bodies business ever. Unless invited along for what ever reason. This topic is one that really pisses me off. It was wrong to go after the Bush twin too.
