If you were the president, how would you fix unemployment?

The new jobs report has come out and it's not looking good. Unemployment is up, and the news is already providing ammunition for political campaigns.

But this isn't just an election year issue – it's one hitting American workers and families hard.

If you were the president, what would you do to fix unemployment and generate jobs?

    • I live on the Gulf Coast and have seen all our utilities go out everytime we have a storm! We think we are so advanced with fiber networks and such, but I look out my window and see these power lines hanging off dead pine trees! How advanced is that? How many people would be able to work if our leaders decided to move our utilities underground? I think that would employ just about everyone, in every state,if you can pass a piss test!!! Come on, I think it would be great, instead of having to buy a house with underground utilities, in a neighborhood you don't like, that still has dead pine trees outside the privacy fencing! I think that would be a wonderful thing, put people to work, even the people in the military coming home with nothing to do! True, you would have to get dirty, but it sure would make our world a better place and save some trees! Every home in the USA would have underground utilities, I believe there would be many benefits that I have not thought of yet!! Start a Petition!! I wish it was that simple!

    • The United States Constitution
      Article 2
      Section. 2.

The President shall be Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States, when called into the actual Service of the United States; he may require the Opinion, in writing, of the principal Officer in each of the executive Departments, upon any Subject relating to the Duties of their respective Offices, and he shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offences against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.

He shall have Power, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, to make Treaties, provided two thirds of the Senators present concur; and he shall nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, shall appoint Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls, Judges of the supreme Court, and all other Officers of the United States, whose Appointments are not herein otherwise provided for, and which shall be established by Law: but the Congress may by Law vest the Appointment of such inferior Officers, as they think proper, in the President alone, in the Courts of Law, or in the Heads of Departments.

The President shall have Power to fill up all Vacancies that may happen during the Recess of the Senate, by granting Commissions which shall expire at the End of their next Session.

      Section. 3.

He shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such Measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient; he may, on extraordinary Occasions, convene both Houses, or either of them, and in Case of Disagreement between them, with Respect to the Time of Adjournment, he may adjourn them to such Time as he shall think proper; he shall receive Ambassadors and other public Ministers; he shall take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed, and shall Commission all the Officers of the United States.

As President, with an obstructionist Congress as is now in office, what powers does the Constitution give unto me to create jobs, lower gas prices, rebiuld infrastructure, regulate Wall Street or banks, etc...?

As President, I could be like many of you seem to think Obama should be and simply refuse to negotiate on my stances, an absolutely nothing would get done, period!

Had President Obama done as many have said he should have, and not given in to Republicans, not one single piece of legislation would have passed over the last 3 1/2 years.

    • Let's see now. First repair the infrastructure that is damaged, then, create new infrastructure by creating better roads, step up the pace for creating high-speed rail lines. Digitize the entire air control system in order to create fewer delays in arrivals and departures. Also upgrade all the ports, and upgrade rail transportation system in order to allow for more container cargo to go by rail. The new energy grid is essential for the new infrastructure, in order to allow industry to maximize production and reduce cost. We need the grid in order to get the power generated by wind turbines in the middle of the country to areas where it is needed most. Also we'll be able to get rid of fracking for natural gas. If we do all this, not only will we solve our unemployment problem, we'll bootstrap our economy into the next millennium. And with a new emphasis on education, including college, we'll have a workforce that will be the envy of the world.

    • Work to convince more 'regular people' to find and support GOOD candidates for local, state, federal offices. That is the only 'trickle down' that will help with anything.

    • It's simple: more stimulus. If the stimulus was big enough in 2009, we would have already recovered from the recession, and the big campaign issue would be abortion or something. We can borrow at record low rates, so let's borrow more and spend more. That means infrastructure, green energy investment and principal reductions on home mortgages. Robert Reich said all of this more eloquently on Viewpoint several nights ago, listen to what he had to say.

    • With Congress already running up against the giant wall of filibustering, the President can little do anything right now. Especially with the Republicans doing anything to win at the expense of the American people. Hopefully things will improve after the election.

    • Infrastructure rebuilding. High Speed Rail across the US. Funded by bonds. We used to sell war bonds, seems to me High Speed train bonds would be a better investment.

    • The attractive homeless would become indentured sex slaves,....the unattractive would be summarily evicted and made homeless,... and the moderately attractive and unemployed would be publicly employed to implement this employment policy.

    • It's obvious that the Executive Branch of government has little control over the economy. And due to an obstructionist Congress, very little can be done. The best the President can do is help returning veterans with jobs, which is already what he's doing.

    • There isn't an answer with the repugs/tpers in the house and in most of the govenors offices. The GOP has stopped anything from helping the recovery. To me they have been acting treasonous. Most of the jobs currently gone are federal and state workers. They're cutting the government/jobs as they like to say.

    • Legalizing, taxing and regulating marijuana would be a start. Building a sustainable energy infrastructure (i.e. solar, wind and biofuels) could provide a lot of work in the short run too.

You picked my answer. Cannabis hemp is too important to ignore. Hemp could be used for industry, in many industries. Hemp is a renewable resource, which is being spun with madness. Our media and politicians ignore the facts about hemp, due to the madness spun in the war on cannabis.

The war on cannabis has fueled a new industry. Private Prisons is on the rise, but will that be an industry, which truly benefits America? No! A Prison Nation is not what I 'hope' for America.

It's time for real change. Holding our media and elected representatives accountable for what they do -- and don't say. Hemp is a viable renewable resource, which could generate environmentally friendly jobs. Hemp led us to Victory in the past and could do it again. "Hemp for Victory" video was produced by the United States Department of Agriculture in 1942. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ne9UF-pFhJY

"Hemp for Industry" video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kybQTtnJjQA illustrates how hemp could be used today, leading us to environmentally friendly "Hemp for Victory" in the future.

Politics is the new industry in America, dividing us along party lines, instead of utilizing facts, they spin political madness to divide us. It's time to end the madness and move along to victory in America. We need new industry. Why not utilize the plant which has been around for thousands of years? Politicians are spinning for industries, who benefit from the elimination of a plant, which could compete with their industries. That's the madness! It's not the plant! It's our politicians and media, who chose to ignore the facts, enabling them to spin madness.
