The Return of the VC2 Leaderboard!

It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for—the new and improved VC2 Leaderboard has returned. We've also thrown in a bonus gift of a brand-new advanced uploading tool.

// So what’s the deal with this Leaderboard I keep hearing about? //

The VC2 Leaderboard features all Viewer Created Content (VC2) uploads to Current.com. You, the Current community, vote on these videos and move them up or down the Leaderboard based on popularity. Each week, a Leaderboard champion will be selected on Thursday, at 5 pm PST.

The video at #1 when the countdown hits 0:0:0 is featured on Current.com. Leaderboard winners will be offered a minimum of $1,000 for the purchase of the video, and we'll consider it for air on Current TV.

To watch and vote, head over to Viewer Uploads: http://current.com/uploads

Want more details? Check out our FAQ: http://current.com/s/faq.htm#what_is_the_vc2_leaderboard

// You mentioned a new upload tool… //

We're also launching a brand-new advanced upload tool. Our new uploader features a streamlined design, and will upload videos up to 60 minutes in length. Just like before, you’ll need to use Safari if you’re a Mac user, or Firefox or Internet Explorer on a PC.

You'll also be prompted to download a Flix plug-in the first time you upload. If you have any problems, please let us know by emailing us at support [at] current [dot] com.

    • Thank you for bringing this back!

I know my confidence has been low lately and thats because this part of Current was very important to me.

Now I can finally finish the pod I was making when it went away!

Quick question. Is this $1000 for the winner something temporary as a promotion or is it planned to be the standard?

    • "Leaderboard winners will be offered a minimum of $1,000 for the purchase of the video, and we'll consider it for air on Current TV."

Ok, so does this mean the winner gets $1000 regardless of whether or not you air the winning story, or is the $1000 payment hinged on the story being approved for air-play?

Its sort of strange that the on-air department can still knock a story off the air even if the viewers overwhelmingly vote for it, this is kind of weird for a station that is claiming to be doing things differently than everyone else - y'know, revolutionizing the media and all that good stuff.

Do staff votes count in the weekly leaderboard VC2 story choices?

I am glad to see the leaderboard back, but it seems to be lacking - looks like all you added was a timer to the existing page, and offer a $1000 prize that may or may not be paid to a weekly winner whose story may or may not air.

2 steps forward, 1 step back.

      Hi Zen,

Yes, the producer whose video is at #1 on the Leaderboard when the countdown ends will be offered the $1000 prize, regardless of whether or not their video is approved for air.

Staff votes will count, the same way they do on Current:News. Current staffers are also part of the Current community, and many are active participants on Current.com.

I wish I understood better how and why the staff are considered the same as members when it comes to voting. Staff are IN the community but they are an entirely different group with a whole different set of powers, privileges and agendas. I'm trying to wrap my head around the idea of someone with the power to choose a pod directly voting for it instead. Does that mean they like it or they don't?

@Plisko-One thing I think is important to remember is that "Current staff" covers a whole lot of territory.

Everyone who works at Current has a staff badge, from producers to broadcast engineers to human resources to developers to online editors to video editors to facilities management.

In reality, only a very small number of staff members are actively involved in picking pods, so for a lot of us voting on a pod is how we share our opinion, just like any community member.

      Thank you.

You explain the reasoning well. I guess I'm just not sure why this is any different from when other corporations like MTV, or American Idol, or Disney have contests that involve prizes and voting but they exclude all employees and their families from participation.

      Hey Plisko,

We do exclude Current employees from submitting a video to air via the VC2 Leaderboard. While we do have internally produced pods, those go through a separate approval process.

      Thank you again.

I didn't mean to turn this into a debate but I guess I was defining voting as participation.

It's a given that the word "staff" has a broad meaning from the janitor to Al Gore. I think it's also a given that many staff will vote their own opinions independently.

The problem is that, if voting directly effects results, there is no way of knowing which kind of staff person it is for any given vote. Is it staff who are senior members that others want to impress? Is it staff with power to choose videos themselves? Staff with power to use admin tools on the leaderboard results? Is it someone who is office friends with those staff? A family member? Is the vote representing the assistant to someone with a high office rank? Is it representing some other kind of office politics? Is the vote representing an independent idea of what Current should broadcast or is it conformed only to the in house definitions of that format?

It could be any or all of of the above at any given moment. Is it unreasonable to wonder about a conflict of interest?

    • Great news! I've been waiting for this, and it will motivate me to return to visiting current.TV more often.
It's what I loved when I first found out about the site, having a chance to watch viewer content--all in one place I might add without having to filter through other types of content. As well as the sense of a community of producers, watching each other's work and having the chance to give kudos when its deserved. And last but not least, the opportunity to get your work seen by more viewers.

Thanks for listening Current.TV and responding by bringing the leaderboard back! You've got me back!

    • Is it gonna come complete with all the whining and complaining too? I remember all the drama that came with that whole leader board thing. Competition getting voted down, friends who have their one time visitors greenlighting them to kingdom come and red lighting others no matter how good the videos were. It was a popularity contest and not to mention all the begging, to 'please come check out my stupid video about nothing!' ..............Who me? I'm not complaining.

Well, it is the internet so a certain amount of drama is inevitable. But we're hoping to keep it as drama-free as possible.

Just like Current:News, we have measure in place to minimize gaming. And while some amount self-promotion is going to happen, remember that you can always opt out of sharing emails or block them, if you think it's getting out of hand!

Not to me! Your comments are right on the point we all have been discussing for the past few months. So, good point! In my case, I'll respect better the voting system when people that vote negative are also invited to the comment box and explain why they are voting negative. If I personally push something down at least I have the courtesy to explain why. Zipping through the board pushing people down does not make this system very reliable in anyways.

A strange sideline to this is the folks who e-mail me other's posts that the sender has commented on, I think, in the hope that I'll recommend what they've said so they'll get picked to be quoted on Current TV.
This has nothing to do with how I chose. I recommend stuff that interests me. Same as how I vote things up.
I only vote down what I find to be truly offensive or just plain stupid.
As for those who chase us around in here to vote down whatever we vote up,...I don't suppose that there's really anything that I can do, other than to report them as suspicious characters.

the complaining was rather legit as there was and still is abuse of the negative vote system that allows people to vote something down with no comment. I have one to two negative votes on a number of my vids that came from an obsessive stalker who's handel has been removed but so far not the damage ie negative votes.

    • What a worthy idea.
I try to check out the VC2's once a week to see what folks find interesting enough for me to find..um...interesting...eh...enough to vote on.
Some of them are truly inspired and inspiring.
Keep those video posts coming, you talented folks, you!
