Current.com Release: Channels, Digests, and Jumbo Footer

Hey Currenteers,

There are a host of big time changes in the pipes for Current (both TV and online), and today is yet another baby step in that direction. We have a few new changes to introduce, so here goes:

// Channels //

You've probably already noticed the links to "news and politics," "earth and science," "tech," "art and style," "tv and film," "comedy," "virals," and "music" in the green bar above. We lovingly refer to each one of these sections as a "channel" on Current.com, and here's a hint, they are going to be a big deal in the coming months.

Today we're releasing some new functionality on each channel. Each one now has four featured slots at the top of the page, which will be used to highlight featured content on the channel. We'll have an online producer for each one of these channels who will be making these selections, posting blogs and behind the scenes content, and even place some of our own original stuff on the page for you to check out on a daily basis.

// What's New? //

You'll notice that our channels default to view the latest items added. Many didn't realize that we have a new stream on Current.com, which can be accessed by clicking the new button on either the homepage, or on any of the individual channels. We'd love to hear what you think of this.

// Digests //

Following a channel now has meaning -- you'll be eligible to receive a digest email showcasing the recent happenings in that channel. You can opt to receive these emails on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis, or if you're just not into receiving digests at all, you can opt out of them completely. Go to your profile, click edit profile, and head over to the notifications tab to set your preferences.

// Jumbo Footer -- Videofied //

One additional note: fans of the jumbo footer, rejoice! We've added video to the footer, so now you can check out the latest comments posted on Current and get a glimpse at some Current video content at the same time.
