What Are Badges? A Guide To Achievements On Current TV

Note: Accruals for our new badges began today at 9:45 am PST. Only activity from that point on is credited towards new badges. Old school "levels" badges are retroactive and retired. They can no longer be earned in the system. If you reached a swag-worthy level by 9:45am this morning, you will get your swag pack in due time.

Literally one month ago we announced that achievements are coming to Current TV, and well, today is the day! We're in the process of rolling out badges and achievements to the site, along with a whole bunch of other goodies like new profile pages, activity streams, and Twitter integration. You can read all about those updates on this post.

This post is dedicated to badges. What are badges? They are used to mark achievements that you unlock by participating on our site.

For example:

Some ways to unlock badges are:

  1. Posting and voting on comments.
  2. Connecting your Current profile to your Facebook and Twitter.
  3. Earning positive votes from others in the community.
  4. Posting stories and comments on Twitter and Facebook.
  5. And many more!

Each badge is worth points, and some badges are worth more points than others. To earn the most points, you'll need to unlock the badges that are most valuable on the site.

When you unlock a badge you'll be notified with an alert at the bottom of the page. Don't worry if you missed the notification, you can always head over to your profile page and find a list of the badges you've unlocked under the "Badges" sort found in the "My Activity" tab.

We also display the total points you've earned below your username on your profile page. Read our announcement on the blog to learn more about the all-new profile page and activity feeds.

Here's a list of the first round of badges we're launching with. Check out the full list, then visit your profile to see which ones you've unlocked. Or better yet, click on any of the badges to see a list of other community members savvy enough to unlock some of the badges in the system.

For example, the Ye Olde-Tymer badge is a retired achievement given only to community members who registered before 10/16/2007. Wanna see who has been around since we first broke ground on the site? Take a look at the Ye Olde-Tymer page.

Don't care about the Olde-Tymers? More concerned with more recent happenings? Visit the Crazy Esteem badge page to see who has unlocked this achievement by receiving positive votes on their comments.

The full list of badges is nowhere near complete. We plan to update the site with new badges and achievements from time to time, so keep an eye on the "Badges" page and the blog for future updates.

Happy hunting!

P.S. We've released some updates to profile pages, activity streams, and introduced Twitter integration to boot! You can read all about those updates on this post.

P.P.S. This is a boatload of new functionality, so if you bump into any bugs or general wonkiness, or just want to offer some feedback, please send us a note via our support and feedback page.

    • I am new to this process so if my comment is inappropriate please forgive. I have a problem with the profanity disseminated on our airwaves and as a result i had to do something, what I have done is small in comparison to the problem but hopefully my small steps will eventually become big ones. Radio is an entity that is very intrusive and as a result very difficult to protect our children from. The popular radio stations that entertain our young children are eroding the moral fiber of our society one song at a time.

The link below is my attempt at making a stand.

    • I am glad that Keith Olberman retained "Worst Persons in the World" when the show launched again on Current t.v.. The change in ownership of MSNBC also showed a tendency of that network to placate the right wing of their programing in the morning and financial/political network(CNBC). The absolute disregard for intelligence displayed by right wing presidential candidates and congressional leaders is factually displayed on "Worst Persons in the World".

    • I have found Thom Hartmanns book very informative and knowledgeable. You can also go to his web site Thom Hartmann and he gives them chapter by chapter for free.

    • Recently having become involved with OccupyEverywhere in Portland, wanted to become more knowledgeable on how Corporate Finance influences our Government. Specifically how the money flows. Initially overwhelmed on line, decided to go get a book on the subject so I could really settle in for the duration required. Wanting my new book to incorporate the effects of the Supreme Court's ruling allowing political contributions from foreign corporations, I figured I'd get a NEW book. Went to Border's first (shut down). Went to Powell's (huge book store) next and asked information personnel for a recommendation, defining what I referenced above. She referred me to "Aisle 31B, under Leftest Studies." Surprised but obedient I went there and yes; Leninism, Marxism, Socialism. Interesting perception. Bottom line no luck yet.
So I'm going to try here. Any good suggestions? Please be gracious and not deluge me with links. I'm really looking for an old fashioned book.

    • We can applaud Mr. Olberman’s special commentary all we want; but unless we act on what he said, and fight, really fight these contraries of the 98 per cent of Americans, those of us who are slowly and systematically being eviscerated by the concerted efforts of the few who care nothing for our needs, wants, and well being, then we have only ourselves to blame. For we cannot hold guilty the reprehensible and selfish few who are gutting us as if we were fish, because, in essence, to do nothing, is to hand them the knife and allow ourselves, by willful compliancy to be victims of our own demise. The Tea-baggers took stand in 2009, as did the Nazi in the 20s and 30s. Can’t we, in 2011, take a stand for own sakes, and “nobly save, or meanly lose, the last best hope of earth.” --- Abraham Lincoln.

I like the spirit of your posting. I'd really like to see US spend time working on social networking so we can reach the people that elected the tea baggers and find out if they agree with the actions that their representatives are taking. One of the greatest issues of our species has been our inability, mainly due to geography and the government's failure to produce that "universal translator" to really be able to talk to one another and find our first hand and for ourselves that people are just people. The Norse men were fierce and killed any who stood in the way of their success in the raids they made throughout the then known world and maybe even America, yet today the world and the people of Norway are shocked that one of their own could kill so many seemingly without remorse. His thinking that he is different for those "horrible" immigrants is but the latest symptom of our continuing failure to reach out and learn who we are and how similar we all are. We all love our families, but the "family of man"???? and so we pay dearly in our politics and too often with our lives.

I say great idea, and I wish we could devote some effort now to reach the people in tea bagger states and show them what is going on and the willingness to let US default for political gain.

I am SO EXCITED that Keith is returning to TV. We have certainly missed his voice of reason. Now my current events roster will FINALLY be complete again- Keith, Rachel, Jon and Steven. Yahoo!!

    • The heads of the settlements in the Council "radiates" settlement in the West Bank held an emergency meeting to discuss the Palestinian situation and the repercussions of a reconciliation agreement and reflected on the settlers in the West.

The newspaper Haaretz, the Israeli in the wake of that meeting, the Council issued a settlement that the reconciliation agreementbetween Hamas and Fatah means that Israel would be required, including pledges to the Palestinian Authority.

The statement called on Israeli Prime Minister, BenjaminNetanyahu, the imposition of Israeli sovereignty over all of the WestBank and occupied in full, he said, adding that if Netanyahu's government did not do that, then at least to impose Israeli sovereignty over all the settlements in the West.

    • i think that the levels were a better way to demonstrate achievement, the badges are giving for everything now, it's like ok a badge for updating my profile and clicking a fucking on up button, i dont care i know i did that , the commentator, contributor, and picked for tv levels were much more appealing ot work trying to achieve...the badges are an ok way to give a sense of accomplishment...just a bit but they're excessive and just for show,

    • Ok. This is kinda cool. At least cooler than the last achievements update with levels for tv and commenting and stuff. I haven't been around for a few months and the site looks much more organized than the last update.

Also, I appreciate the ye olde-tymer recognition. But, I won't stop missing current.tv and red light/green lights :)

    • I did want to add, however, that I personally can't keep up with all of the updates on my profile feed. Even in the short period of time I've been on Current this morning, I've seen over 400 updates on my feed when someone I follow posts, comments, or votes something. I know this new setup is still in the early stages but I'd be interested to know if there is going to be a more streamlined way to view these. I'm a little concerned that when I log in tomorrow I'll be informed that there are 2,462 new updates.

I think the key will be to streamline your "following" list, but we plan to keep a close eye on updates and consumption. As always, there will be tweaks. Let me know how you feel after visiting the site tomorrow!

That kinda stinks. I wish somewhere on the profile we had number stats so we could keep tally. Maybe even have a specific area or box to show if we are about to level up. Even if its just for our eyes only.

BTW -- Make sure you look at "My Activity" when visiting your profile, not "Latest Updates."

Latest Updates = activity from people you follow on the site.

My Activity = your activity on the site.

    • While I am not a big fan of the 'Badges' concept, I like the 'Profile' changes and am very happy to see CURRENT and its staff investing both time and money in the site to try to make it a better place to visit and to just hang out. Even though I have been a member here for several years, I only started visiting this site daily after I gave up on the PROPELLER social news site (part of AOL) several months ago. As part of the paid staff at Netscape/Propeller for its first 3 years, we constantly tried to make the site a better place - up until AOL decided not to put anymore money into the venture.

My hope is that CURRENT will continue to listen to its online community in an attempt to make this site a showcase of what Social News should be

Thanks TimALoftis. The infrastructure change in profiles and activity streams were fundamental efforts to improving interactions and consumption on the site, so I'm glad you're enjoying them.

The badges are like the cherry on top of a sundae -- small in comparison to the rest of the dessert, unique in comparison, loved by those who enjoy that sort of thing, and frivolous to those who do not.

      Thanks for the feedback!

If i get them then who cares.
if i dont get them who cares.
i've been browsing this site for a few years and this is most definitely not going to change my opinion of the site or how i use it...

    • I see this as part of a punishment/reward system to control behavior for Current's profit and PR. Punishment is something like censorship of comments, reward is for posting stories on facebook and twitter, thereby generating more traffic/revenue on current. I don't need no stinkin' badges, as others have expressed.
