Achievements Are Coming
When I started working here at Current TV, one of the first projects I took on was an achievements platform. We designed a rudimentary set of levels for the launch of Current:News with the intent to eventually replace them with achievements, but we never got around to releasing the achievements platform as planned.
There was a lot to be done in preparation of launching achievements, so the concept never went away 100%. Now we are just a few weeks away from unleashing our first batch of achievements.
How will they work?
Various activities, like commenting, voting, and sharing, will count towards earning achievements. When you complete certain numbers of those activities, or perform them in combination with other activities on the site, you could end up unlocking an achievement.
For example, if you comment a certain number of times on the site you may unlock an achievement based on total number of comments. If your comments rack up a certain number positive votes from others in the community, you might unlock a different type of achievement.

Each achievement you unlock will come with a badge that is worth points. Some badges will be worth more than others, and you’ll be able to find a summary of points and badges earned on a shiny new profile page. From time to time we’ll unleash new batches of achievements to unlock. Some will be time-sensitive, and others will require some hunting in order to unlock. But I’ll have more on all of that in a future post.
What does this mean for our existing levels? Better yet, “what about my swag?”
When we launch achievements, we will simultaneously discontinue levels. Yes, we’re sad to see them go. But in many ways this overhaul is long overdue.
Those of you who have worked hard to achieve levels in the system will be rewarded with badges indicating your accomplishments. The coolest part is, these old-school level badges will not be available to anyone joining the site after the new achievements platform launches.
If you're still waiting on a swag pack in the mail, don't fret. You will receive your swag in due time, but we’re a little backed up right now.
Consider this post fair warning if you still hope to achieve level 3 in our old school levels. There will be more swag opportunities via achievements in the future, but those of you who have not reached level 3 when achievements launches in a few weeks will be out of luck as far as swag is concerned.
So get cracking! If you have questions, feel free to hit me up in the comments. I’ll have more to post about this release when launch day comes around.

Maybe a better illustration of the idea of "tease us with your promise of merit" than Katie Melua would be the analogy to greyhound racing.
It seems to be more fitting to compare the achievements and badges to the hare and the members to the greyhounds that chase after it.
The never ending "promise of merit" is the impossible dream that the members never can catch just like the poor greyhounds.
While the sponsors are the ones that bet on the races win in the ratings

Just as I am a LITTLE unsure about the way Current TV is going all MTVish these days!!! Maybe things will work out & this will be fun!!! it DOES kinda have a bit of a weird video game vibe to it that I kinda like, but don't really understand at all Because it seems a bit freestyle at this point!!! Yeah...I guess I have little room to say too much until this has been going for a while, but it just kinda feels weird!!! & when I said flawed,it was really because I don't see ANY hint of order at all to this system!!! I am sure that will been worked out for sure!!! (HOPEFULLY) :)

By the recent Policies of Current, how is this news, technology, or even eligible for popularity ranking on the site?
This post should be removed from all groups and banished to the newly created feedback /support/criticism area.
All posts that gaze inward towards the state of Current are supposed to be filtered into the proper channel where they are never seen by anyone again.
Kind of like a complaint box, where an employer has his employees write done their criticisms and concerns and put them into a box which is later just emptied into the trash.
It's a form of censorship that keeps workers from airing legitimate criticism and concerns with other Co-workers and helps prevent a negative consensus against the employer.

I agree that this shouldn't be in news or technology. When I posted, the only group I added this to was Current.com blog (where it belongs). Other members of the community added it to news and technology, and I'm pulling it from those channels now.
As for the recent policies regarding "feedback/support/criticism" handling, this post is not "support, feedback, criticism, or policy related." It's an announcement of a pending feature release on the site, so different circumstances and therefore eligible for popularity on the homepage. Here's a breakdown of the types of posts that fall into our new feedback policy:
Feedback: Posts stating how we should change something on the site.
Support: Posts of the "I'm unable to do x, y, or z on the site" variety.
Criticism: Posts of the "Current used to be great, but now it's changed" or "Why don't you do x anymore?" variety.
Policy related: Posts about our community guidelines or editorial policies.
This post does not fall into one of those categories.
I hope this helps clear things up.

So when staff members post something pertaining to Current it's eligible for popularity ranking, but when anyone else posts something pertaining to Current it must be "filtered out" to the feedback/support/criticism area?

Dagum:
There's an important distinction here. When staff makes a site announcement such as this it impacts everyone in the community, so allowing it to surface in the popularity list on the homepage is a good way to do that.
When someone posts feedback/support/criticism, it's most important that staff sees it in order to respond. These types of posts often center around an individual's experience on the site. Some members of the community might agree with the original poster, others might disagree. But bottom line, these types of posts don't always serve to display a definitive answer to the feedback/support/criticism inherent in the original post.
Basically, we want to make sure that information regarding the site is shared clearly and with little confusion. With our new policy, you can assure that a post from the Current Blog, authored by a staff member, and detailing upcoming enhancements to the site is the latest and definitive news regarding the community and that website. There's little to confuse there.
On the other hand, feedback/supports/criticism can be clearly answered using Get Satisfaction and made available for everyone else to see, without answers and responses being lost in lengthy discussion threads on Current.com.

mario_a:
Yes, but you are not taking into account almost all member posts pertaining to Current are posted NOT intending for Current STAFF to answer or remedy the subject matter of the Post.
Very few of the posts that have been "filtered out,"(censored) were posts that were intended for the current staff to hear and address some technical or other concern.
The majority of posts pertaining to Current that were filtered out had the Current Community as the intended audience, not the staff of Current.
These posts are made to draw the communities "attention" to a problem or concern pertaining to current, not necessarily for the Current staffers to "resolve" it.
If I feel there are not enough pot stories on Current, I am not going to post on feedback/supports/criticism area, because supposedly current staff has no control over this. I would do a post stating "there is not enough pots stories”, or “Current staff is Censoring pot," because my audience is the Current community, and I don't expect or want anyone to resolve, but just want the community members to be aware of it.
And obviously the feedback/supports/criticism, is an ineffective forum for getting the Community members "attention" on something pertaining to Current. Otherwise Current staff would put posts –such as yours – under the support section, instead of in the popularity system.

Dagum:
Sorry, this is the policy.
This post is a part of the product blog for Current, and as such belongs on the site. If you posted a call out for more people to participate in your pot-related group, things might be different. However, a post claiming that Current is "censoring" pot stories is not only factually incorrect (we do not), but it also sends the wrong message to the rest of the community. It is a criticism of Current based on an opinion, and it does not belong in the news/popular feeds as based on our feedback/criticism/support policies.
If you disagree with these policies feel free to post about it on Get Satisfaction.
