From the Community: Obama's new job plan, Alaskan quake and a naughty cop

We're taking a look at some of the most popular stories from the Current community, and we've rounded up some highlights to share. Check them out and add your two cents:

Obama Rolls Out a Jobs Plan That DOESN'T Need Congress
Submitted by Misti

President Obama administered several federal agencies to identify "high-impact, job-creating infrastructure projects" that can be facilitated now. Obama is taking action and plans to move forward without the Congress.

"The president has also directed the Education Department to come up with a "Plan B" updating the 2001 No Child Left Behind law in the absence of congressional action. The message to Congress is clear: Do your work or we'll do it for you.

The departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Housing and Urban Development, Interior, and Transportation will each select up to three high-priority infrastructure projects that can be completed within the control and jurisdiction of the federal government. The effort is labeled as a "common-sense approach" to spurring job growth "in the near term."

Obama's latest has left an impression on the community:

squarethecircle: "We've been waiting, let just see how this goes. Good luck with your new backbone, may it not break again."

savroD: "Go for it Mr. President. You have nothing to lose and a future to gain!"

faye59: "Thank goodness. I support him whole-heartedly. The bums don't want this economy to get better. He's been doing all of the work anyway. The House only meets four days a week , and only two this week after such a long vacation."

7.1 magnitude earthquake strikes Alaskan coast
Submitted by JanforGore

A 6.8 magnitude underwater earthquake struck the coast of Alaska at 1:55am Friday morning. The U.S. Geological Survey originially put the magnitude of the quake at 7.1 but later downgraded it. Tsunami warnings were cancelled about an hour after the initial quake.

"The epicenter was some 1,000 miles from the state's largest city Anchorage, USGS added. There were no immediate reports of damage.

"It's a very remote part of Alaska," and few people would have felt the quake, USGS seismologist Jessica Sigala told AFP."

Police officer who had sex on duty won't face charges
Submitted by KSirys

An on-duty New Mexico State officer was caught red-handed having sex on a car hood. The act was taken by a security camera and is the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Department posession. The embarassed officer was not booked but he is currently on paid administrative leave.

"At this time we don't believe that any criminal acts occurred," New Mexico State Police Sgt. Tim Johnson said in a statement.

"The New Mexico State Police is very embarrassed by this incident and will work tirelessly to restore our good name and earn the trust of the citizens back," he added.

Our community believes the devious officer got off too easy:

wtthfkov: "Over the years how many teen agers have been arrested for having sex in their cars and their reputations destroyed, and this stooge gets a paid vacation out of it."

nanac: "The citizens of Santa Fe should demand that this cop gets charged with the same crime that they would be charged with, if they were caught having sex in public. His job doesn't make him above the law. If this is not a crime for citizens, he shouldn't be charged, otherwise he should be treated the same."

Colin_McCabe: "They should restore their reputation by firing this idiot and slapping him with a public indecency charge and put a "unprofessional conduct" sticker in his records. They won't of course because cops protect their own and not the citizens. That's the real meaning behind "protect and serve."
