Marines photographed with a Nazi symbol flag

We're taking a closer look at this interesting story from the Current community. Check it out and add your two cents:

US Marines posed with Nazi symbol in Afghanistan
Submitted by Anonmaly

A photograph taken in September 2010 surfaced of a sniper team posing with a flag resembling the logo of a notorious Nazi special unit. The Marine Corps stated the symbol was not acceptable but explained the soldiers in the photograph will not be disciplined because it was a naïve mistake.

The Marines believed the SS symbol was meant to represent sniper scouts and never intended to be associated with a racist organization, said Maj. Gabrielle Chapin, a spokeswoman at Camp Pendleton, where the Marines were based.

"I don't believe that the Marines involved would have ever used any type of symbol associated the Nazi Germany military criminal organization that committed mass atrocities in WWII," Chapin said. "It's not within who we are as Marines."

The Corps has used the incident as a training tool to talk to troops about what symbols are acceptable after it became aware of the photograph last November, Chapin said.

The community respond to the Marine photo:

ThirdSection: "Many people who join the Marines do so right out of high school, so assuming that this was a naïve mistake, what does this say about our public education system's attempts at teaching history?"

corndog67: "Who cares? These guys put their lives on the line every day, for a bunch of worthless f*cks that want to kill them. Let them do what they want. Maybe it does mean Scout Snipers."

MotherForTruth: "We need to thank our government for making the policy to invade other nations and train our young and vulnerable men to become killing machines."

bailey78: "They Phucked Up Again. Who is training these people? Who gave them the flag in the first place they are in a war zone and these flags don't just show up. I smell something sour and it's not just this flag."

Mark701: "The Marines believed the SS symbol was meant to represent sniper scouts..." It's difficult to imagine that ANY members of the US military don't know what this symbol means especially when the symbol is recognized worldwide by civilians and military personnel alike as that of the hated German SS. IMO these morons thought they were being super bad-ass using the initials in this manner. Stupid, stupid, stupid."

Vierotchka: "Naive mistake my arse..."

    • "I don't believe that the Marines involved would have ever used any type of symbol associated the Nazi Germany military criminal organization that committed mass atrocities in WWII," Chapin said. "It's not within who we are as Marines." This statement from Maj. Gabrielle Chapin is absolutely absurd. Why is it that military people see American citizens as buffoons who will swallow any contrived propaganda they throw at us?

It is impossible to be a jarhead and not know what that symbol represents...and no punishement because it was a naive msitake? They wanted to equate themselves to the ever crack trooper mythology of the SS.

      Semper fi? Yeah right...
