Inside Iraq: Off to War

Justin_Gunn
In 2005, Army Lt. John Prettyman documented in intimate detail what life is really like for his fellow soldiers in Iraq. In this installment, eager soldiers find that simply getting to their destination in Iraq is a battle in itself.

    • great pod! soo funny and very true. My hubby was deployed to iraq, and told me the route was very similar. But honestly, i think that everyday military service prepairs you for that, because everyday it's hurry up and wait.

    • I agree with your post on the iraq war. Even though this war is very stressful it still is for the liberty of this country. I just wanted to let you know that I support everyhting you do over there. I have a freeind that is in iraq and he says also that the wait for the airplane over there is very streeful and tiring as well. Well what you are doin over there I support you 100%. Well I would just want to say thank you for what you are doin.

    • Uh, excitement is what for him? Shooting his gun at someone? Terrorizing people with weaponry?

A, I don't think that's fun, it's tragic actually and it appears to be a propaganda piece aimed at encouraging young men to donate their short lives as cannon fodder.

Don't get me wrong, I support the troops, I don't support the mission, and it's not a righteous war, in fact, it's not a war at all - but given enough time and effort, it really could become a war.

I'm sorry, it is not possible to support the troops and not support what they are fighting for. You can say you don't like war, no one does, unless you are a crazed maniac. However, people seem to forget that these people flew our own planes into our buildings and land and killed thousands! To say you support the Troops and NOT their mission (which by the way is being fought over there so that it's not knocking on your front door) is absolute Left-Wing bulls***. I love my brother and my fiancee both willingly sacrificing their lives for a mission you do not support to keep you safe and snug behind your computer. Enough said by me.

No, you're wrong, you can support the troops without agreeing with the mission and I don't associate myself with any political party. It's not because I have a problem with war (though I do), and I haven't forgotten 9/11. I happen to think that this war in particular, was not the result of a direct threat to the US. If you share the common belief that the 9/11 attacks were the result of a terrorist group working out of Afghanistan, then we should be on the same page concerning the war on Iraq. It's crap. That's why I don't support the mission.
I support the men and women fighting over there, because they've got this idealistic view of things that justifies their job as a soldier (I'm being intentionally vague because I can't read minds and tell you why someone would join the military, though if I had to guess, it would probably be money or free health care for life), and a set of skills that I would find useful if America ever were invaded.
The individual soldier is not responsible for the military as a whole. I think part of your confusion is the use of the word "troops" to define one soldier, giving the impression that one is many, one is the whole, or at least a big part of it when in reality you can't take away the individuality of each person to make them bigger, only give the illusion of it.
I love the players, not the game.

    • Yeah, I'm not sure if this is an accurate portrayal of all troops but it does look like it can get pretty boring.

    • I don't know if I'd go as far as to call him a Steven Spielberg, but this clip definitely showed a different side of Army Life than portrayed on CNN.
