She is brave. Anything to get the message out, right? This is a topic that needs to be more in mainstream media, but is not. It is so shocking and wrong the way the animals are treated, and most people have no idea. Regardless of how you feel about PETA as an organization, facts are facts. Animals are tortured, abused and mistreated, and that message definetly comes across. I will be glad to see this on TV. Thanks for spreading the message!

Good work John, I knew you could do it! Here's a comment for all the pro-PETA and anti-PETA comments. This is a non-partisan approach at documenting a protest by PETA. That's it.
And yes, the Center for Consumer Freedom is behind petakillsanimals.com, but that doesn't mean they don't kill animals, those photographs are available through other sources. Notable sources like local news.
PETA does make a spectacle out of everything, but the whole euthanasia angle seems hard to sell to me, especially when it's being done illegally (not by licensed vetrenarians) and the bodies are being disposed of in such a cruel manner in local dumpsters..."need I say more?"
Go ASPCA!
Once again John, I'm glad I green-lit this. Congratulations.

John,
I think you did a good job of being objective with the interviews and reasonable with your personal input. You let the people make their points that were there, and added a few opinions that were not preachy. I feel like this piece has less to do with the issue of the chickens, and more to do with the behavior of the people who were participating in or reacting to the spectacle.
The clever thing about PETA is that they know how to make a spectacle and they know people are going to make a fuss about their tactics.
That whole petakills website is silly. The CCF is behind that...need I say more?

Watch it again Michael and you will see, I didn't take sides. Your comment is noted. Thanks for taking the time to express your opinion.

No green light. Yes, there should be more, humane, restrictions put on livestock merchants, but I don't pay attention to most of what PETA has to say, they have made way too many "stoopidt" comments in the past to enumerate.I raised chickens as a child, they're dumber than cows. Is this girl as dumb as a chicken? Oh, wait a minute, she took off her clothes in 30 deg weather to protest the treatment of chickens in front of the retailer and not the supplier. I rescind the question.
I don't usually eat at KFC, but if i saw PETA out there I would make it a point to stop and pick up a bucket.
Christian families are having their children taken away and raised in another religion in the Sudan, most never see them again. Those that try to rescue them are killed or enslaved.
4 and half million (plus) babies have been slaughtered in the womb since 1973, for convienience sake.Doesnt that bother anyone? And, please don't give me the old saw about rape, incest and emotional health.
NARAL's own stats don't support the argument.
I'll be generous and spot you 500,000 dead babies.
That still leaves 4 mil due to irresponsible, lazy people.
There is no such thing as an accidental pregnancy.

How in the world did we get from chickens to aborted babies?
-
OutDoorJohn
-
-
Twisted_Glen
-
Why don't you ask a woman who can't take care of herself (let alone a baby) in a world without abortion at a time when adoption is not an option how she feels? How about you ask the street physician she finds to perform the operation because it's her only option sans a cloths hanger and a running bath how he feels about it? Or better yet, why don't you ask the vagabonds that grow up out of a terrible childhood and become today's vandals because no one who's "pro-life" is willing to take care of them how they feel about it?
Abortion is a terrible thing when it's done late in a pregnancy and the baby has developed a brain and can feel. But if it's done at an early enough stage it's no where near as traumatic or gruesome for the mother or fetus. It's also one hell of a lot safer than trusting "Jimmy HackSaw Street MD" to do it with dirty instruments because there's no other option.
By voting against legal safe abortion, you're voting for dangerous illegal abortion. I'm not a proponent for abortion (legal or illegal), but without that option women have been known to take drastic measures.

I think some people need to spend there time worrying more about things that actually matter. It's troubling that people are more worried about the little seals and chickens then they are the thousands of unborn babies that are slaughtered every day. That would be something worth making a documentary about. Find a doctor who performs abortions and ask him mow he/she feels about murdering unborn babies.

Barnum and Bailey was actualy the first to have an elephant born in captivity. I don't know much if anything about other circuses but the Barnum and Bailey had it's winter headquarters in Peru Indiana the home of Cole Porter. I learned a lot when I visited there about animal cruelty and I saw a great circus act I might add.
How can any informed person support PETA? Using flashy and even sensationalist messages to promote themselves the entire PETA machine is more geared towards it's own agrandizement than the genuine welfare of animals. No grenelight from me.I understand the nature of your involvement in the piece but I can not support something that might go to air and somehow benefit PETA even slightly.

I read in the local paper that this protest was going to take place. I was coming off of a commercial shoot and decided to stop by. It was a spur of the moment thing. I am not a PETA suporter. As a matter of fact, I worked as a circus promotor for a short while, and that circus was a PETA target. They claimed that it is unnatural to keep elephants in captivity. Nevermind the fact that elephants generally live 20 - 40 year longer in captivity than in the wild. I enjoyed taking the elephants to grocery stores and what not to promote the circus, and they seemed to enjoy the attention and the fresh produce. Those elephants seemed to have a pretty good life to me. But, I must say. I think it is wrong to mistreat chickens or any other animal food source before killling them.

I greenlighted this but I think it's telling that at the end the one interviewee says "I feel more sorry for the woman than the chickens at this point." Hey John. I'm sorry to cause such a commotion. I do enjoy the piece and I understand that you aren't taking sides. I didn't intend to direct any of that towards you or your pod.
I don't think too many PETA volunteers do condone that sort of behaviour, but I also don't think many of them are aware of it.
Again, sorry to clutter up your comments page and I can delete some of these if you'd like. It just drives me mad when good people fall victim to PETA's hidden hypocrisy and assume that we are the one's who are ill-informed.
I'm deleting the comment with the link because I spelled deeds as "deads." Here's the link again if any one's interested in what PETA really does. I must warn you all, as John has posted, it is not for the faint of heart.

I must reply to Twisted Glen's most recent post. As you watch this pod please note that I do not take any side. I am just showing what took place. I am not preaching to you or anybody else. All this pod is about is the lengths in which PETA will go to get their message accross. I believe that PETA, ASPCA and local Humane Socities all have the potential to do good and do bad, but I'm not expressing any opinions here in this video. That said, I welcome any and all comments. That was a disturbing link you posted. I wonder how many other PETA people would condone such practices?

For laj:
I do support spay/neuter programs. That's why I can't support PETA, who boycots and protests organizations like the Humane Society. PETA protests the local animal shelters for killing animals while killing animals themselves.
Do a search on Jerry Greenwalt in Google and see how PETA's protests lead his poor wife to a heart attack because PETA was protesting him for doing what they've been doing all along. Also note that PETA has killed more animals than it has saved (about 75% more) and dumped the bodies in local dumpsters. They don't try to find homes for companion animals because in their mind, keeping pets is a form of "animal slavery." My wife is an LVT and she hates PETA for their grievous miss-use of funds and their cruel treatment of animals. She supports the ASPCA. Do some research before preaching what you call truth to me.
I'm not saying it's wrong to support animal rights. I'm probably the biggest animal lover I know. I'm just saying it's wrong to support PETA, especially if you care about animals.

It is true, PETA is faced with the same issue that any local humane society or animal shelter faces: the overpopulation of companion animals. The unfortunate result of people not spaying and neutering their dogs and cats is the euthanasia of healthy animals.
However, Twisted_Glen is referring to a website set up by a non-profit group that is mostly, if not entirely, funded by the tobacco, restaurant and alcoholic beverage industries and works to discredit anyone who criticizes the products that make them rich.
If you are disturbed by the fact that dogs and cats must be killed because they do not have homes, I encourage you to become an advocate for companion animals by promoting spay/neuter programs in your area.

You're allowed to shoot in public. If the protest was in public (not in the parking lot), then you're allowed to be there. Don't be intimidated by Cops -- be polite and get more information (and keep rolling :) Dude, if you want to be on air, you need a camera operator -- those are two jobs that are tough to cross. Find a camera op or find a kid and put it on auto -- they'll learn.

The shots were taken widely because of a couple of reasons. The first is because I was a one man show and didn't want folks to step out of the shot from my stationary camera. The second was the KFC management continually pushing me back from the action. They took it very seriously, and let me know several times they didn't want me there. Most of the time I was forced to be accross the street. The cops were a bit intimidating as well.

I like your non-partisan approach here John. You're not really advocating PETA or putting them down (at least these people aren't as nuts as the people who chain themselves up naked outside of circuses with fake scars on their bodies). I personally think these people are hypocrits and hate mongers, but that's just me. I could go on and on about this wacky group of cultists but we're here to comment on this piece.

I love the Waylon Jennings-like cadence of the narration, though it was a bit too slow and deliberate, which added to the piece's uneven pace.
The idea of PETA operating in Arkansas is really interesting and I would have loved to see the focus be less on the issue that PETA was trying to address, and more emphasis on the contrast of such a liberal protest in the Deep South. I also would have like to see more images.
But again, love the voice. Your style has a huge opportunity for some really interesting social commentary. I am really looking forward to your next POD.
