Xtreme Waste

On the West Coast of New Zealand, a community group has taken control of their own waste issues. They have set a goal to reach zero waste. With the land fill shut they have rallied under their own motivation to reuse and recycle as much as they possibly can. They are a group of amazing individuals and in under 8 minutes this is a glipse of what they do and their story.

    • Congratulations on getting accepted for TV. I liked this piece very much. Great time lapse and stop-action animation. Happy to see people so passionate about recycling!

If you have 5 minutes, please check out Drawn For Life for a Green Light consideration.

Looking forward to seeing more from you Common_People.

    • Any message that has to do with the preservation and conservation of the environment, and/or the improvement of the natural resources that we rely on, is worth to be shared with lots of people. Those kinds of messages certainly help increase the awareness, and hopefully allow more people to stop taking those things for granted. I salute you for taking this pod to TV, and I wish I could have contributed for that with my vote.

I have been away from the website for some time, but I know you have checked and supported my work in the past. I have another production posted here now, which tries to share a similar kind of message when it comes to the conservation and preservation of our ecosystem. I would appreciate to have your comment on that.

Please take a look at my latest pod when you have a moment, and let me know what you think about this reversed perspective on the world. Thanks for your time!

    • I would really like to see this become an issue with current waste managment programs across the US. I'm sure most of the arguments will be based around that it's not as productive or cost efficient enough to be really profitable. But I can see stuff like this done on small levels, local levels, and maybe have the potential to evolve into macro businesses as things naturally do by utilizing the resources of individuals of places that do want to help make changes. I think it was in a newspaper artical or National Geographic where a researcher was digging in a dump in New York state and found a newspaper in near mint condition from the 1950's.

The goverment needs to re-evaluate many of the taxes of the nation and considering moving them from one place to another so that it's profit neutral but persuades certain things to happen. Some of Al Gore's polution tax ideas, as well as various other ones everyday people and myself think of would work great to utilize that revinue (if available) to support businesses such as this recycling center to exist; because Waste Managment can't take all our trash alone.

    • what an uplifting story....almost got a little teary eyed there for a sec...... had it not been for the questionable reggae music...,that's the only major thing I would change to this great pod you've created. If you wanted to tighten it up to get airtime (too bad they aren't airing pods of this length/depth lately.) then I would recommend you cut the most difficult to understand people you interviewed....despite the fact that I'm totally a sucker for that sexy kiwi accent.
Also, thanks for the feedback on my subway bboys pod......I would really appreciate some input/ suggestions for "mayday mayhem" pod...its basically just a collage of video/ interviews set to music....which I'm not sure how............. or if i want to tell a story about / draw conclusions from...any feedback would help...keep the good stuff coming...your lettuce pod makes me hungry!???

    • A very fascinating story. I think you have to break it up a little to keep people with short attention spans like myself on task -- change the music around (it gets a little repetitive, so play with sound, no sound, different levels and different songs and effects). Also, I think you did a great job editing those interviews together -- it obviously took a lot of care and patience -- so highlight these interviews by interspersing them with some action and "on the fly" type interviews (for example, people doing and talking at the same time). And let us see some of these people interacting with each other as they do their thing -- I bet it's a fun, quirky community. This might mean cutting down on some of the interviews, but I think it could work in the end.

Either way, good job reporting on such a great story!

    • good. the subject matter is vital and important and the information needs to be broadcast.

i was left as a viewer overwhelmed by the amount of information i received via interview. i wanted more. i wanted to experience the people interacting, as in, not just b-roll of sorting through waste, but segments where the actions of recycling constitute a scene. The start and completion of a small project at the site, to balance the way the information is conveyed...

    • Important topic and well done. Extreme waste, illegal open-dumping and all of the ramifications that those issues have on the environment are so important for filmmakers to cover -- images of waste speak volumes in and of themselves.
I think what we need to start doing is rallying for more funding for illegal open-dump cleanups. There is a great program in the Illinois EPA in my state that is tackling this problem. But more still needs to be done.

Overall we need a better system of accountability, inspections and harsher citations enforced on those who continue to pollute in illegal ways. The group you spotlighted in your pod is very inspiring.

I reccommend checking out the documentary "Crapshoot" about sewage, sludge and septage waste. It recently aired on the Sundance channel. The doc presents some interesting solutions to illegal waste disposal.

Overall-- great work and check out my pod "Generation Debt" if you have a chance. It's about gen x/yers facing credit problems, student loans and other crisis.

    • you wanna know what I liked......the people being interviewed..fairly thought out answers...and the topic of waste is so appropriate....I wish we could see how they actually recycle stuff other than reselling it...like plastics and stuff.....also how much of the "waste" is reused...presently...90% ??? 90% is my guess....which would be astounding. Liked the background music..cheers mates.

The production and time spent on this is clearly shown and is well worth it. The only thing that confuses me is the music, i expected to hear Caribbean accents at first! Still good though.

    • The use of timelapse is becoming a bit of a trademark for you eh? (Was used well in 'Ute City Farm Girls' too.) I don't think the stop-motion rubbish segment works as well as the timelapse segments though (it feels comedic and out of place). The music was perfect. To get aired I suspect you'll have to chop the length in half but maybe that'll give you a chance to use PatrickHJohnson's suggestion (22Mar) and recreate the intra-pod titles from recycled materials - which will be a nice touch. Regardless, I greenlighted it. Good Luck.

I love to see what happens when we decide to work for change. The globe is changed. One person at a time. Keep this rad piece going. Thanks for sharing. • Great segment. The subject matter is a great one. The production value is pretty good. Excellent use of timelapse footage. My only critical comments would be that the intertitles could benefit from something more creative than the stock Final Cut Pro generated text. Have an artist draw up some title cards or perhaps make them out of recycled materials.
