This photo successfully eliminates anything that could divert one's attention or permit one his/her denial. It's "simply" about an adult and a child, with an incontrovertible truth about the child's fate. One can't help but be that adult's hand holding the child's, and be certain that one knows what the adult is feeling. And if one is brave, one can be that child--if only for a moment.

"This picture was taken by a time magazine photographer named Kevin Carter. It is a disturbing picture showing a vulture awaiting the death of an African child during the famine. Kevin Carter was severely and harshly criticized for recording this image and the suffering and abuse that he received from both the public and the press and media was too much to take. Kevin eventually commited suicide due the non stop criticism that he received for taking this unforgettable picture."
