The trick used most often in the media these days isn't to twist the truth or lie...but rather to leave important pieces out. You point is valid...true hard-news hardly exists anymore (and we all know that fox news is one of the greatest offenders of that idea--or rather declaring themselves to be a reliable "hard-news" source when they are nothing more than a good gossip column). The passion to investigate and get to the bottom of the events occurring in our lives has been replaced by ratings and popularity contests. If somethings is catchy, stimulating, or controversial...that's what makes the news. Blogs are quickly becoming our most reliable source for "news".
I find the criticism The Daily Show gets by the media--to how it is "destroying" youths' view on media and current events--to be quite the paradox. Quite honestly, the daily show does about the same quality job at producing "news" as most of the major networks and papers....only we all know that the daily show is just a joke on the events of our lives...kinda makes you wonder about the rest of them.
