I have been a life model for art classes for several years now. The statements below by edodeweert and themodelundraped (which I suspect are the same person) are not an accurate portrayal of the artists or models I've worked with (and I have spoken with hundreds). Of course, everyone is different, and I can only speak for myself. But here is my philosophy toward modeling:
I believe the human body is good and wholesome. We are made in the image of God, and every human being has dignity and worth. Our culture and media give so many negative messages about the body, and it's really sad the amount of destruction that has been done to people's self-worth and their attitude toward others. We need good art to counter this message and portray the dignity of the human body. When a model stands nude in front of a group of artists, he/she is saying, "This is good. This is natural. This is real. This is worth capturing in art." Artists draw the human form for a number of reasons, but when they are doing so, the model is representing all of humanity at that moment. It doesn't matter if the person is male, female, young, old, tall, short, fat, thin, etc. It doesn't matter if the model has cellulite, stretch marks, scars, etc. All of these things are real, and people need to see reality. Because true beauty is rooted in reality. The fantasy of "ideal beauty" portrayed in our media is shallow, and it causes a great deal of damage. The reason I model is to help people see reality and to appreciate humanity in general.
It's saddening that some would pervert something of such beauty as the human body. Rather than making it about a celebration of humanity, they turn it into their own sexual fantasy. But there are always those who will pervert the good. We need people to continue to speak up and produce good art so that the perverts will not get the last word.

life drawing sessions is all about people being able to gaze upon some t and a in a "society-sanctioned" environment.
nudism is all about people being able to gaze upon some t and a in an environment participants are trying to defend by claiming to be"liberated" from the constraint of clothes... - 1 year ago

the requirement for a person posing for art to remain very still for very long times is absurd, degrading and serves little purpose other than to perpetuate the "model culture" in the drawing room.
since time immemoriam man has been transfixed by the female body...ever since the invention of the camera, drawing/painting the human form has become rather obsolete and is really all about t and a.
i believe the last pornographer not using a camera was egon schiele.

The extremely quick figure gesture drawing is quite a challenge unless you have a particular knack for it. For some of us it simply takes a little to long to define the correct proportions,.....and fsssssssssssssssst,....a minute is gone. But the power of those things can be impressive.

I don't think that I could keep still for long enough for someone to paint me. I get fidgety. I'd have to be asleep or something.
