Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach, the pregnant Marine who was missing from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, is dead, the Onslow County sheriff said today. The 20-year-old woman last spoke to relatives from Dayton, Ohio on December 14th and was reported missing by her mother on December 20th.

Lauterbach had accused 21-year-old Cpl. Cesar Armando Lauren, a fellow Marine, of sexual assault. Lauren is currently not in custody and was last seen near Camp Lejeune about eight hours before authorities starting looking for him.

    • Vierotchka, think that is a great idea. DNA is almost 100% accurate. It will be interesting to watch how this all plays out.

    • jubal, perhaps they will take the DNA of the fetus she was carrying, and that it can be proven that the marine who raped her is the father.

    • This is awful. I think there is a problem in incorporating women in the marines and mixing them with men (where the men largely outnumber the women), they should form units and regiments of females only, separate from their male counterparts - this would ensure greater safety from rape and other abuse this way.

    • Why am I not shocked. The poor girl was scheduled to testify against a fellow Marine.

Looks like a clear case of silencing the witness to me. I hope they find the evidence they need to convict and punish the perpe-traitors. Because that is exactly what the marines who ordered this hit are; traitors.

    • Such a horrible story and what is most tragic to me is how long it actually took for her to be reported missing, to begin looking for her, to look into suspects, etc. I mean they didn't question the guy who she accused of raping her right away? I'm not a detective but he would of been pretty high on my list.

My thoughts and prayers are with her friends and family.
