According to emerging reports from the Sri Lankan defence ministry, 12 Sri Lankan soldiers and over 40 Tamil Tiger rebels have been killed in a series of battles in northern Sri Lanka.

The attacks come as part of an 'offensive' strategy from the Sri Lankan government in an attempt to flush out the rebels from their forest strongholds on the Jaffna peninsula in the north of the country.

The Guardian reports that the defence ministry claims "more than 1,100 rebels and 80 government soldiers and police have been killed so far this year," although the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) – the official name of the Tigers - dispute the figures, claiming to have killed hundreds of soldiers.
