Geldof, a tireless campaigner for alleviating poverty in Africa, bagged an exclusive interview with the president for the latest issue of Time magazine, out Friday, in which he described Dubya as an unexpectedly witty and emotional man who has "quadrupled aid to the poorest people on the planet".
He also referred to a number of little-reported initiatives the president has set up in Africa. These have included funding HIV anti-retroviral drugs for 1.3 million people, a $350m project to stop the spread of tropical diseases and the awarding of $1.2bn in contracts in Tanzania and Ghana through the Millennium Challenge Account. Bush claims the US public doesn't know about many of these because the press "weren't much interested".
Geldof's piece is reported to humanise the man who recently scored his lowest ever approval ratings in the polls but the former Boomtown Rats man also writes: "Some of these thoughts, were they applied to Iraq, would have profound implications on the man's understanding of how the world functions: 'US solutions should not be imposed on African leaders'."

I love how all of a sudden Bush is supposed to be this huge humanitarian....what a crock of BS! And like fanafish said where is all this money he is giving to african countries coming from? And yes the press shows and tells stories from their own point of view, but no matter what, this is an evil man who has run this country into the ground. And better question to ask, what are these countries going to give to him? How much oil drilling is going to start in Africa soon in the name of humanitarian aide?

Killing with kindness
There's lot of expressed concern on the part of the US, the UN and WHO about AIDS in Africa.Oddly, other much more serious diseases and environmental problems in Africa are being ignored.
The solution to the "AIDS problem" in Africa?
Lots of immuno-suppressive drugs and the replacing of breastfeeding with infant formula.
One researcher called the west's anti-AIDS program in Africa "diabolical." This video explains why. Bush & Friends are experts at combining government "humanitarianism" and genocide.

He could cure cancer, and i still wouldn't accept him as a person. His faults and misjudgment far outweigh any global benefits he has done.

"Even from tax-payer funded public radio this sort of negative press against President Bush and Republicans goes on and on all day every day. BBC news in America is the same way. I do not mind reporters having an opinion, but they toss true objective journalism out the window."
Fox News is chief among them in having an opinion and tossing true objective journalism aside.

i'm suspicious, though, that bush's recent surge of humanitarian foreign policy is only a result of guilt after his soul searching tour in the middle east that was way too late. or, worse, an attempt to be completely written off in american history as the worst president ever.
still, i agree with mjsmith11. mainstream press media only feed into the vogue and the rogue. it takes sites like current to pool together other facts and truths between the lines. even here, we occasionally see the same sort of journalism frenzy that feed into one-sidedness. i know i've been guilty of that before.

I read the same article in Time. it is no wonder that you do not hear about this in the press. In Berkley, California, the most liberal place in the U.S.A., Bush has something like 15 percent approval. In the Washington D.C. Press pool, President Bush only has 7 percent approval. The press in the United States is more concerned about impressing how they feel about things, instead of reporting the news. Tim Russert, the host of "Meet the Press", is so well respected because he understands that it is not important how he personally feels about issues or people. Do you know the President George W. Bush has preserved more land in the United States than any other President? You never hear about the good stuff you only hear slanted negative stories, except from Fox News. It is just like when you hear about John McCain, all you hear about is the fact that ultra-right wing Republicans do not like him. So what. John McCain's political platform is reflective of the moderate GOP majority. All you hear about is far-right wacko nut-jobs insulting him. When you hear about the Democrat Party race, all you hear about is "can Hillary come back?" "Saint Obama has another endorsement" Even from tax-payer funded public radio this sort of negative press against President Bush and Republicans goes on and on all day every day. BBC news in America is the same way. I do not mind reporters having an opinion, but they toss true objective journalism out the window.
