Following in the footsteps of her colleague Jacqui Smith who considered herself hip for buying a kebab in Peckham, Harrien Hannan has had a similar PR disaster. On a tour of her constituency, Peckham in South London, Harman was seen sporting a delightful stab proof vest, not because she was frightened of the threat of violence but "as a matter of courtesy and because I was going out with the team." A faux pas indeed.

"No one takes her seriously," one minister said, "and the idea of her appearing at PMQs is frankly terrifying. The Tories will have a field day."

Whether she wore the vest out of fear or it was a PR mistake we will probably never know, but it's clear that it has become ammunition for Labour opposition. Liberal Democrat mayoral candidate Brian Paddick chimed in on the whole affair.

"The fact the deputy leader has to wear a stab-proof jacket to protect her from her own constituents is a sad indictment of mayor Ken Livingstone's failure to deal with gun and knife crime."
