San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom had decided to change the route of the Olympic Torch run hours after the stunt on Golden Gate Bridge by Free Tibet protesters. The new route will not be disclosed until Wednesday morning and security will be enhanced to avoid possible pandemonium.

    • I have followed the Tibet issue and Tibetan Buddhism for two decades. I have read MANY volumes on the subject over the years and done my research. Funny how all this 'questionable' information comes out at this time??? The Chinese are masters of propaganda use your own mind and find the information out for yourself.... The fact that the GREAT Chinese empire spoken of was actually Manchurian, NOT Han Chinese (at that time the Han Chinese were running for the hills and woods to save their lives) and these maps were drawn by the 'chinese empire' to include Tibet as way of 'scaring' off Mongolian attacks, because at the time Tibetans more feared and fierce than the Mongolians, ...I could go on… How much do you know?

    • LOL... sorry cockroaches, specks of dust and lice are political in this day and age. It IS and ALWAYS has been a political event, and even if it was not political before it IS especially this times as Mr Rogge and the IOC deemed China worthy on an agreement (hmmm that’s not political) It is naive to believe it is not, anyone supporting China in any form is supporting ALL the human rights violations they are committing. I cannot believe people think a little splashy splash in a pool, tossing sticks and running in circles is more important than people’s lives. HOOOORAY FOR THE OLYMPIC OF BLOOD!!

    • leave the olympics out of this. yeah china has got problem but why does that make your causes more important then an old tradition that brings the world together? athletes come from all over and put aside their differences and practice the ancient art of sports and compitition. why would you deny them that?

    • I have been following the issue of liberation of Tibet since the 80's. That's 28 Years if I am not failing on my math here. I am totally supporting the Tibetan people on their efforts and I am also protesting Chinese genocide against them.

However, please, pay very close attention to the Mayor's neglect with his own backward. His public transportation and his City local security it is very faulty and I do not see him coming out to STOP or at least protest against it. Now He is only doing this because it became an opportunity for exposing himself to the Media. I am not saying here that he is totally responsible for this big San Francisco Public Transportation Acoustic mess left by Mayor Willie Brown's Administration, but his Administration is responsible to fix it and they have done nothing to do it in 7 Years.

    • i have a desparing thought that the only reason we are paying any attention to tibet again is because of all this violence and unrest. otherwise we would just forget about it like we have the past decade or so.

    • I'm just as worried. I think we have to leave our protests to letters to Congress, marches or flag displays such as the one yesterday in San Francisco, which I must say was quite the stunt. Stunts like that reassure me that people do care in the world. Right on!

    • No argument there guntown. Considering how most of the world views President Bush to begin with it could cause political protests if he attends even if China's dismal human rights record wasn't an issue. I don't think he should attend either and that would be an appropriate protest.

I'm just worried that chasing down the torch bearers to extinguish the flame and that type of protesting could turn ugly, isn't necessary the solution and could easily escalate exponentially into something unintended.

    • But thanks to its politicization, it will only be seen as ignoring Tibet/supporting China if Bush shows up to the opening ceremony at this year's Games. How do we, as Americans, accept the presentation of America in regards to the China/Tibet situation if Bush attends the opening ceremony? The only way to protect what is left of our international reputation is for him not to show.

    • Yes patsarts and TDubs. Protesting is appropriate but maybe it would have been better served during the selection process. And if done now should be non-violent, like the banners put up in SF.

The Olympics are a symbol of all countries coming together and we have to consider the athletes who have trained for years for the honor. Even the torch bearers for whom this should be a great honor are disrespected by this and someone could get hurt. It also makes the event political and sets the occasion up for possibilities we really don't want to encourage.

We need to stop and think what our actions will create and who we may hurt in the long run before jumping on this band wagon. By politicizing the Olympics we could be putting many innocent people at risk who want nothing more than to compete, support, participate, coach or watch.

Protest our manufacturing going to China. Do without it if it's made in China unless there's absolutely no choice. Reject China not the event.

    • I have always loved the Olympics. As a child I would watch them beginning to end. It was pure in the 70's and 80’s. Now with all the corporate sponsorship it feels a little dirty and has clearly opened itself to the connections it has made. As such, boycotting the Olympics is as much a reaction to the climate of the Olympics. Sadly, that may be our only option. Boycott the Olympics and dash the hopes and dreams of many an athlete who have sacrificed everything to compete. It may be the only way the Olympic committee perceives the seriousness of their miscalculations. The Olympics are supposed to be a politics free zone. It’s not. It’s actually a hot spot for poorly veiled political lobbying. That’s why we are having these problems… or maybe it is just one reason. Accept the Olympics. Reject China... if you want but don't forget birmingham in the 60's. We were doing the same thing not long ago.

    • What Crud? Almost EVERYTHING we buy in America is now Chinese. Believe me I try, but it's next to impossible at this point.

It's a sad fact, but this year, the Olympics is DOOMED. Worst choice of host country ever.

    • Boycott the crud made in China - not the olympics - that will just punish the athletes and families.

I'd just like to know what Giant Head decided to hold the games in China in the first place? Maybe they called in our (USA) massive debt card?

    • The International Olympics Committee is thinking of canceling the international legs of the torch relay altogether, given the problems experienced thus far. I expect San Francisco today will be make or break for any further international stops for the torch.

    • Sounds like this is a good one all around. No violent protests, yet a loud "Dude, that aint right!" is sent China's way.
