Depressed teens more likely to try pot

Depression, teens and marijuana are a dangerous mix that can lead to dependency, mental illness or suicidal thoughts, according to a White House report being released Friday.

A teen who has been depressed at some point in the past year is more than twice as likely to have used marijuana as teens who have not reported being depressed — 25 percent compared with 12 percent, said the report by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.

    • Of all the studies that have been released, the White House chooses to release this one? Go figure? Once again, we are being misled with only negative stories by our government. Luckily for them, they get to pick and choose what they tell the American people. Sad for those who know they are spinning the negatives. But hey, political campaigns are financed by the same groups who benefit from the war on cannabis. Why should we expect honesty? It's always more of the same.

Change is a word used to mislead voters into thinking things will get better. 'More of the same' is the reality in which we live. Sad, sad, sad! The more things change, the more they stay the same.

    • On a completely separate note, researchers have also discovered that depressed teens are more likely to drink alcohol... no f***ing duh.

They are depressed and many of their parents probably have the habit of turning on the television in order to distract their kids when they need emotional contact and attention.

    • Personally, I don't believe that medicating any sort of depression with anything is a solution. Any sort of medication you use probably runs the risk of making yourself dependent on it, and you cant deal with your problems without your medication.

Pot is not to blame here, its dependent personalities of teens, plus I don't trust any study that comes out of the White House these days

    • A friend of mine is dependent on pot smoking as a coping mechanism for her depression, and she has been since her early teens when her mom died and her dad was an alcoholic. I understand that smoking marijuana as a coping mechanism during the emotionally turbulent teens can lead to serious mental problems like not being able to deal with any kind of emotionally jarring situations and freaking out.

But I am reasonably sure that her smoking has actually prevented suicidal thoughts rather than caused them. As long as she is stoned she can keep herself together but she has many other issues which resulted in the depression in the first place.
