Federal officials say a raid at a northeastern Iowa meat processing plant this week was the largest in U.S. history.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say 390 people have been arrested on immigration charges after Monday's raid at Agriprocessors Inc. in Postville. The facility is the world's largest kosher meatpacking plant.

The raid was aimed at seeking evidence of identity theft, stolen Social Security numbers and people who are in the country illegally.

Fifty-six of those arrested have been released on humanitarian grounds; many of them have to take care of children.

Others arrested in the raid at are being held in county jails and at a converted fairgrounds.

    • I love to hear people's answers to the question,"Did the pilgrims have green cards?" I'm Lakota so it makes hearing their fallacious reasoning that much more entertaining. Sure, secure borders and homeland security are very important. But I doubt we would be hearing this uproar if the immigrants were Canadians or Europeans. As a taxpayer I am outraged by the notion of others not contributing or bleeding the system. But at the same time their paths towards legal citizenship shouldn't be extremely expensive or burdensome. If they don't have the money up front perhaps they could have extra taxes deducted from paychecks for their immigration services. Maybe the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services offices could offer them a nice healthy meal and some water after their grueling desert journey in the spirit of Squanto and other Natives who helped those early European immigrants.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

    • How come they dont raid pizza parlors in New York or Irish pubs in New England? Why ? Race! I was pissed off when I seen the Ellis Island commercial.
They made it seem as if anyone can immigrate to this country that is white! My father was a illegal immigrant! he worked hard everyday to make a better life. Now he is a citizen and continues to do the same > what is wrong with that? Ya we need border control but if someone is willing to walk thru a desert to get here let them in!

    • All of the sudden people give such great importance to "you are here illegally" - 20 years ago, noone really gave a damn if you were illegal or not as long you had a good set of working hands.

Now, after the media has demonized it (just like they demonize african americans, social medicine, electric cars) - everyone seems to have a problem with it.

Let the good working people live in peace!
Noone is illegal in the world!

    • This is a government issue.
All immigrants want is to feed their family and be successful, just like all of us. The reason why they don't enter properly is their lack of money for paperwork or their country of origin not letting them obtain a visa.

There must be a reform that would facilitate a legal entry to the country and the acquisition of a working permit.

    • Its a tangled web, we know. But lighting that 'web' on fire to get rid of it, doesn't get rid of the spider. Which in this case, is our governments complete lack of immigration reform and border control.

They want to entertain the masses with raids and mass deportation, so as to hide the fact that there is a much bigger issue at hand.

    • Nobody supports criminality . But these types of raids do nothing but instill a mob mentality amongst people who need nothing more but another reason to hate immigrants, legal or not.
These people have families, they have homes, and they have the will to work for their money.

They don't settle in trailerparks, waiting for their government cheese and public aid.

They go out and work the jobs that many LEGAL Citizens are too proud to have. Or are too lazy to do.
