Finally, a sober statistical indictment or our traditional media's criminal ineptitude and neglect. What passes for 'news' on all the other cable networks is nothing more than high school gossip transposed to the nation's capitol. It makes me extremely thankful for the emergence of more people powered media like Current.
Watched this video. I wasn't shocked. Firstly, we are already overloaded with junk online. Secondly, the amount of information online are plenty. A great deal of people that I talked to don't know how to extract the information online. Its long, tedious and also the fact is that a lot of the sites or TV are not in English language. They are in languages like: Chinese, Arabic or others. Thats my two cents.
The reasoning behind Fox's choice of broadcast is self-evident, (feeding fear and distractions to their viewer base) and is a separate issue all together.
As for CNN and the other major publications, I am more than certain that the Anna Nicole Smith saga would have lasted 1/5th of the time it did if were not for the significant viewing audience it received. These publications pander to what brings in the viewers. Until we as a viewing population decide that what pertains to us is what goes on outside our borders, then the publications will have no reason to change.
Ignorance is a choice ... that's true. However, the fact that two publications pay more attention to the greater world (outside of US) does not change the fact, that the mainstream TV news stations like CNN and Fox talk about pointless things for HOURS!
A couple of months ago, I was telling all of my friends how informed I was. I had been watching CNN non-stop. I'd have it on in the morning, and I'd have it on as I did my homework at night.
Then, one day, one of my friends seemed to disagree with how well informed I was. I don't think I really started to agree with him until Anna Nicole Smith died. For a solid week, CNN seemed to devoted every moment to her death and where her new born was and who the father was.
It seems the only time we pay attention to the rest of the world is when tragedies occur, like the recent cyclone and earthquake in Asia. Other than that, the rest of the world just fades away.
We are gravely ill-informed.
i am thankful for the day i discovered current. up until that day, the only international news i heard about involved which country brangelina was adopting their new kid from. now, i actually know what's going on outside this country.
The "news" coverage by mainstream media is ass-backwards. Rather than aiming to inform, mainstream media's goal is to distract the masses from what really matters. The media keeps the sheep in line while the government fleeces them.
