Starbucks logo under fire: shows partially covered breasts

Image
sapsrbbiz
The new retro logo at Starbucks is stirring controversy. The logo shows a mermaid with partially-covered breasts.

A Christian group based in San Diego called The Resistance says the logo looks like a naked woman with her legs spread like a prostitute.

The Resistance is calling for a national boycott of Starbucks.

Starbucks says the logo is appropriate. It'll be around for a few weeks.

The logo is based on a 16th century Norse woodcut of a two-tailed mermaid.

    • Starbucks recently closed some of their stores. They're feeling the pinch like everybody. I think th enew logo is a lame attempt to get a few more walkin customers inside the stores.

You know you're in Starbucks when you say" I'd like a large"
and they say " T-shirt or Sweat shirt?"

Starbucks will go down in history as one the last big capitolist icons.

    • Thanks for correcting me on that beeman. And Middle_East I like your comment and others of you about bigger issues. Christians need to be more focused on things that have a greater value. We tend to get too caught up on petty things like this. When the real issues go ignored, like world hunger, poverty, neglected children, women being raped, abortion, and spreading the True Gospel of Jesus Christ.

    • Aight, let me tell you, I am a Christian, and a very conservative one at that. Some things I agree with these groups on. But this is ridiculous, This situation is very minor, and they are out just to get attention I believe. Its just like the deal with Miley Cyrus. I mean if these things were done in the 18th century it would be okay and just be considered "art". And Cyrus will show more skin on the beach than she did in the photo. Also wasnt this the original logo for Starbucks?

    • You'd think that a Christian group would be more concerned about world hunger, war, poverty, and human trafficking over the new Starbucks logo.

It's only coffee, people. Really expensive coffee. Please worry about something of more substance rather than a drawing of a mermaid looking like a prostitute.

...Does anyone even find that picture to be even remotely arousing?

Let's please stop focusing on the persecution and bombing of other religions and the suffering of all the people in our country and around the world and FOCUS ON A STARBUCKS LOGO.
That is totally our top priority in this country, and it shows where we're headed. A naked mermaid...wait, what kind of women have they been looking at?!

    • Jefftego, I happen to know of flat-chested women who can be pretty darn slutty, as well as large-breasted women who are rather prudish.
And in all seriousness, the idea that big boobs=slut is sometimes a contributing factor in anorexia, with some girls not wanting to be seen in a sexual way.

" Her breasts are tiny. If she looked like a slut, as the Christians claim, she would have huge breasts, or at least some implants."

Also, about nudity, and I always have to tell this to uber-conservatives, "if god wanted people to wear clothes - people would be born wearing them," and I don't know about you, but i was born 100% naked. Naked is natural. Nudity happens, leave it alone.

don't need to be in san diego more like south pole
they need to follow my rule. if you spend all your time
with your nose in your business you won't have time to
stick it in other people's business. everybody needs

I honestly believe religion is the largest problem the world will need to address in the next 100 years. More problems and wars are created by difference in religious beliefs than anything else.

no WONDER i start feeling uncomfortable and nervous whenever i go to Starbucks!
It's not that they're aggressively taking up every piece of real estate possible, it's the partially exposed breasts on the tiny tiny logo, making me feel jittery and unclean......

The logo must be removed so i can drink my MSG laden coffee in peace!

And although boycotting starbucks for their logo is a stupid idea, how about boycotting them because of their rediculous prices, cheap trade agreements with south american and african farmers and unethical practices.

    • i used to work at a starbucks - and i thought , going into the job , that i was at a point in my life where i had transcended hate and intolerance - a notion which quickly evaporated with the first SUV driving moron who pulled up at the drive through asking for a "decaf tall , non fat , extra hot mocha , light on the whip , with cinnamon sprinkles , etc. " . in my world , there are two flavors of coffee beverages : caf. and decaf.

    • No seriously. Look at the numbers I put up there. It's about, technically slightly less than, 10 cents per ounce for a plain old coffee of the day (which is the only thing I ever get). Seriously, that isn't bad is it? I'm not trying to be sarcastic and I don't work for Starbucks (I'm a web developer, btw) but if 10 cents per ounce is too much what do you think is a fair price? Even our local diner charges about that (an 8 oz. mug is 79 cents... not too much less).

    • People always complain about Starbuck's "outrageous" price for coffee. It's less than $2 for 20 ounces of joe. Is that so outrageous? That is 10 cents an ounce. How much does an 8 oz. cup from a greasy spoon diner cost? Doesn't seem outrageous to me at all. If you are actually talking about the cost of their more involved drinks then be clear. You want syrup and chocolate and whatnot I guess you have to pay for your poison. As for a plain, old coffee... Starbucks has a great price.

    • Christians are trying to take away everything, and getting nowhere really.

Fact: Mermaids don't have legs, therefore they can't be spreading their legs like a prostitute.

Fact: Mermaids aren't real. Why complain about something that isn't real.

Not to mention that according to fantasy stories, the mermaid was always naked from the waist up.
The fact that they even have it partially covered is amazing. If they don't like it, don't freakin' look at it.
Seriously, the only reason why they would do ANYTHING is because they're annoying the crap out of Starbucks.

Ironically it was the Christian group who made me think about a naked woman with her legs akimbo. I think they need to grow up a little.

    • in fairness to christian groups, i highly doubt "The Resistance" speaks for all christians out there..

im pretty confident that most practicing christians would find this sort of story and the attention its getting somewhat ridiculous.. dont know if its fair to paint them all with the same brush..

its true that throughout history, some rather strange issues have been made into a big deal by religious groups from all faiths.. but in my opinion, this is more a reflection of our own incompetence and lack of insight.. because of our own society's acceptance and interest in such garbage..

the only cure i can think of.. is each of us elevating our own standards.. rising above the pettiness.. and not getting caught reacting to inflammatory bait by others less focused..

    • First question: Is there really such a group called "The Resistance" or is this some PR firm trying to create publicity? Nope: There is such a group whose sole member appears to be Mark Dice.

It is hard to look at this group's web site to see if Mr. Dice is serious or not. He apparently is a major poster of self made Youtube videos showing him getting kicked out of various places.

My suspicions is that he found a way to stretch out his fifteen minutes of fame, and uses his celebrity status to pick up girls.

These jerk-offs don’t even realize Starbucks couldn’t buy the publicity they’re now giving them for free. At least we know how these sexually repressed religious zealots spend their free time. You’ll have to excuse me while I get back to real world issues.

    • Reguardless of it being blatant or not, this is another case of people trying to see sex in everything. There is a line between artistic and sexual; this specific picture stays on the artistic side. It is neither explict nor realistic, depicting a female mermaid with two tails.

What people see after that is merely personal interpretation, and artwork should not be censored for that.

I just see a two tailed mermaid, nothing more, nothing less...

O my gosh, thank you so much. You sir are a genius. a darn genius. You have said in a sentence what I couldn't say in nothing short of a story. Sexual repression can come out in many an odd way. Christianity is one of many. Maybe one of the worst as well. Masturbation and sex will set us all free. I can't feel anything but disgust for these people. Probably the same amount they feel for there own bodies. Sad really there should be an activist cause to help these people. Maybe thats where they should be focusing there attention. Not some innocent, illustrated. mermaid.

starbucks marketing department: "we know the ceo wants a shiny new campaign... but how can we do that? we're feeling the effects of the credit crunch too... and tv adverts are super expensive"

the marketing department has a brainwave: they could change their logo to a slightly provocative version of their standard logo ... provoke a couple of loony christian groups to make a statement, and the press will do the rest. starbucks will be re-injected into the public's consciousness - much like the adrenaline shot that brought that guy in pulp fiction back to life...
