The report from Civitas warns that the middle classes have been alienated by a service which targets ordinary people rather than serious criminals. The report from the think-tank says incidents which would once have been ignored are now treated as crimes - including a case of children chalking a pavement.

I'm a teenage boy living in britain, and my (thankfully, very few) dealings with the police have been far from pleasent.
I've been threatened with arrest for dancing around a tree after a gig got closed down, when literally 200 meters away a bunch of kids were underage drinking heavily, and been delayed for far longer than nessercery when driving to an exam, for having a broken brake light.

We are becomming more and more of a police state. These police have gotten out of control, it used to be to protect and serve but it seems that has changed. With tighter budgets and bigger cars and SUV's and Hummers etc the guys have to justify thier fat paychecks by harassing innocent people. It's a shame but that is what America has come to. You can't trust the police, the politicians or the president. I guess dishonesty like everything else, runs down hill.

I'm not sure where this source came from, it just seems like someone's blog. Either way I judge police just like I would anyone else. The nicest cop I ever met was the one that gave me a citation. There are good cops and bad cops. There are cops that really go out of their way to help citizens, and then some that don't. There are nice cops, and there are assholes. Its just which pick of the litter pulls you over.

The police don't do their jobs anymore... They just want a nice cushy career... Only a handful of cops left in this world have any scruples at all, but I should say the same of our whole species...

Interesting quote I heard at the recent Marijuana Policy Project benefit in NYC. Author Harry G. Levine, co-author of Marijuana Arrest Crusade: Racial Bias and Police Policy in New York City 1997-2007, told me,"Don’t let them fool you. Cops love the laws. Policing is generally dangerous. When you arrest someone, you’re married to them for hours. Given the choice of who to spend that time with, marijuana arrestees are ideal. They aren’t puking or violent. They generally behave. And the added bonus is getting fingerprints into the system for the black and Latino population. We’re up against cowards and racists but we will win in the end.”
I think it's a telling quote on what we're up against yet it also emboldens us to tell the truth and change the laws.

It appears from the accompanying photos that the article refers to police in Europe. Interestingly, the same phenomena is occuring in the US as well. I can attest that Broward County, FL Sheriff's Deputies are doing much the same thing. I can't tell you the number of times by teenaged son and his friends have been harassed by police when they weren't doing anything...just hanging out being kids. And Florida is not exactly crime-free. There is plenty of crime here but I guess they either aren't being paid enough to care or they are afraid of risking their lives to do the real police work. They would rather harass kids and hang out at the local Dunkin Donuts.
