The manufacturer of the A380 superjumbo has pledged to produce greener planes powered by radical "step change" technology before 2020 in response to airline clamour for more fuel-efficient aircraft.Airbus said it would produce planes powered by "emerging technology" by the end of the next decade, as the high oil price becomes a bigger driver for change than the environmental debate.

I certainly hope they fill that plane to capacity before they fly it around. it would be a waste of gas otherwise... like leaving the lights on at the office overnight, while no one's there.... incredible waste.

Well...that's not exactly a fair statement. Boeing's development of the composite 787 clearly shows that Boeing is working towards lighter, more fuel efficient planes. It may not be through the use of Bio-Fuels, but it's a start. I love Airbus, but the A380 is the Hummer of the Skies. Wouldn't it be much smarter ("greener") to focus on building smaller, lighter, more fuel efficient planes that won't bankrupt carriers if they can't be filled?

This sounds good to us now, but we'll forget by the time 2020 comes. Watch them not even go through with it.

Nice to see that the wealthy, who will still have the luxury of air travel, might be able to fly on greener planes.

Nice to hear, but there doesn't seem to be any substance here beyond a CEO announcing a company goal. If I were to create a list of all of the CEO announcements that I've heard or read over the years, readers would find it pretty amusing. A CEO's job is to set the vision for their company and drive the company to reach that vision ... but not only are such statements NOT promises or guarantees, they're often overly ambitious and not particularly likely to occur. So with this one ... who knows?
