Columbia University student raped and tortured for approx. 19 hours

Image

A 23-year-old Columbia University student was raped and tortured in her own apartment for approximately 19 hours.

BE WARNED--DESCRIPTION IS HIGHLY DISTURBING

(taken from NY times)

"Over many torturous hours, she had been repeatedly raped, sodomized and forced to perform oral sex, a prosecutor told a jury on Thursday. The accused, Robert A. Williams, 31, had doused the woman’s face and body with boiling water and bleach, forced her to swallow handfuls of pills and to chase them with beer, sealed her mouth with glue, and bound her wrists and legs with shoelaces, cords and duct tape, said the prosecutor, Ann P. Prunty. And now, Ms. Prunty said, he was asking the woman to gouge out her own eyes with a pair of scissors.

And so the woman, sitting on the floor of her studio apartment in Hamilton Heights and holding a pair of scissors between her knees — the blade pointing toward her face — tried to stop the suffering. She lowered her face to the blade, but turned her head at the last moment, trying to stab herself in the neck instead of her eyes."

This is only a part of what happened, but I feel the rest of the description is too graphic for some people, if you would like to know the rest, click the link, but be warned--the descriptions are highly disturbing.

    • I like to think im a person who always give the benefit of the doubt, but in this case no. This is just absolutley disgusting and this man should get what he deserves. Im sure if and when he goes to prison he will be tourtered the way he tourtered this young women. Personally, I feel the guy deserves either the death pen. or send him to another country where they still believe and eye for an eye is just. Regardless I hope he suffers from his actions.

    • there is no use abusing the guy. we must try to get to the root cause of such behaviour and deal with it in an effective manner.
sex ( to seek more and more pleasure) and violence are two sides of the same coin. Never in the known history of mankind was society so obsessed with sex as it is today. that obsession takes its toll.
its sad that women get the whole brunt of it.

    • This is beyond horrible but not an excuse for more guns or more violence. There is no easy, practical answer for what should happen to the monster that did this or deterring the next one. But I have to admit I am all for putting this idiot UNDER the prison.

That's one of the most disgusting things I've ever heard.
All six of those people deserve the same judgments that have been passed on the guy in this article/ thread.
Very true about poor victims getting no attention in the media, and about this sort of thing happening all too often here.

I just pray for him.... I hope one day he finds the lord, so god can forgive him!

    • I agree with everyone who says that this man does not deserve death but something far worse. This man is hardly a man anymore, thus I feel that we should not treat him as a man.
It may sound harsh, but if this had happened to you, or someone close to you, I feel that you would think this too.

    • The death penalty is way too generous an out for this malicious and sick bastard. I think he has EARNED the privilege of having that poor woman's family and loved ones torture him the same way he tortured his victim, sans food, water, shelter, or our concern, DAILY!!! I think we need to broadcast his daily torture live and unredacted on primetime television as a deterrant.

    • It's amazing how distorted the human mind can become. A normal human being could easily believe that he should have known better than to do a terrible thing like that. But maybe in his mind it was the 'right thing' or 'entertainment'. And no, I'm not saying he has the right to live amongst society. I believe he needs to go under serious physiological studies to determine the reason of him doing this. This is just one more step into pin-pointing and researching psychological disorders.

And that poor women... there's no telling how mentally unstable she'll become. Hopefully, she's strong and uses it to her advantage. I'm hoping to find a follow up on her.

    • Everyone here is so eager to say how they think we should punish this person. This isn't the most important issue at hand. No matter what we do with him, it wont change what has happened to the victim or that it will happen again.

We should be trying to understand why this happened so that we can prevent this from happening to someone else.

    • that is probably the worst thing i've ever heard in a long time that has happened to a rape victim, relatively speaking. that poor girl, her entire life has been totally thrown off its tracks. this raises a million questions, though: why was her assailant in the elevator? was he waiting for her? did he know that she would be there, or did he just happen to sneak into her building? i'm just guessing, but if he was a former prison inmate and homeless, he must not have appeared as if he lived there or something. and what was going on with her building security that someone let him in?! i've lived in buildings before in urban areas that have security codes and then homeless sneak in and knock on your door. someone should cover a story on that. *hello, current TV! it's unsettling at the least, especially because i'm sure there are lots of apt. buildings in nyc that don't have security.

    • i disagree with all the people saying he should be put to death.
he took this girl to the point where she wanted to die.

he should be locked up in the worst jail around and taken to the same point.
when he is put in general popultaion prison and treated like some guys bitch. he too will be wishing death.
but it wont come so easy for him.

people like this make me sick. i can see how anyone can do this.

her life must be totaly ruined.
i feel so sorry for her.

Did you read the rest of the article?
Among all the other monstrous stuff, he left her to burn to death when she lost consciousness (she woke up and used the flame to burn the rope around her wrists).
Perhaps SHE should decide his sentence.
If she'd died, then her next of kin.
This sack of human trash doesn't deserve to be someone's bitch in prison.

I think that's a novel idea... let the victims of crimes like these, assuming they survive, decide the fate of their perpetrators.

actually, i'm seeing how this might not be a good idea already. What if she's too scarred, too exhausted, too traumatized, to speak her mind about it. And I guess it might also give the perpetrators a reason to make sure they 'finish off' their prey, an encouragement we dont want to give them.

Indeed, letting victims decide their attacker's fate isn't the way to go, for a variety of reasons...it looks good on paper, though. Inconsistencies aside, as was said earlier, making this guy suffer wouldn't be the moral thing to do; getting him out of the picture in the most humane way possible would be the best all around.

Legally speaking, it rarely does much good to apply broad sentiments to extremely specific situations and events.

putting him in jail takes him out of society and at the same time he will lose the freedom that he tried and did take away for 19hours.

    • I’m sorry but bringing the innocence project into this discussion is just a poor tactic. The first page of that wikipedia article states,

“The Innocence Project refers to a number of non-profit legal clinics in the United States and Canada. It directly serves defendants who can conclusively be proven innocent by DNA testing of evidence done after their convictions.[1]”

No one is disputing whether or not this individual committed this atrocity. This creature will be convicted BECAUSE of the DNA evidence and the ATM security camera which recorded him attempting to draw money from the victims account. There is no need to be fearful of a wrongful conviction. That why I believe this guy seriously needs to die.

You also cannot apply the hate begets hate argument to this situation. That type of reasoning does not make any sense. It’s better served when applied to prejudices, and like I said before no one is disputing whether or not he committed this crime. Blindly applying that logic to every situation means that a person cannot defend his or herself from a violent attack because that in itself is a form of hate.

I will never agree that my tax dollars should go to nurture a disgusting creature that raped and tortured a person. I hate this man for what he did and I hope to god everyone else does too. A decent, moral society should never fear to hate rape, torture and murder.

    • Transform rage and horror into action:
There's a sexual assault crisis center in your local community. Cash donations are ALWAYS welcomed, because they are not tied to a funding source. It can be used freely for things other than direct service, like clothing for victims or emergency spending or whatever. If you have a problem donating money (some people hate the fact that nonprofits have bills to pay and copy machines to operate), you can always donate new clothing (sweaters and sweatpants are good), underwear, shampoo, backpacks and whatnot. Personal care items are pretty helpful for victims when they have to go to the hospital. Often their clothes are confiscated by the police (as evidence) and having something new to wear out instead of a hospital gown is helpful. You can always ask if they have specific needs, too. Sometimes they might run support groups and need supplies. Every center is different.

For those who prefer not to donate, you can volunteer on the crisis line (men and women). If that's not your style, there's always events in April (sexual assault awareness month) that you can volunteer for.

Go for it! Find a center: http://centers.rainn.org/

i cant believe that this happens. really, is it that entertaining?

point is, he should prefer that he dies, but we wont let him.

    • My prayers go out to this woman and her family. What an astonishing and horrible crime against life. I have no say in what should happen to this man other than that he should suffer just as much as this woman had.

I sincerely hope this case gets dealt with immediately instead of hearing about this trial a year later like with most cases. I hope he's in court immediately, sentenced quickly and done to him what is due as soon as possible. Honestly I would like this man to be obliterated by tomorrow, but with anniefree as a rape survivor, I do agree with her about hatred begets hatred. However, there is something about this man that isn't human and he should be treated less than such.

      Simply unbelievable.

    • Hi Stephenthomson,,

This is just awful and I agree with you that this guy is a monster who does not deserve to live.

But one warning. You don't want to decide a punishment policy based on this extremely disturbing event. The problem with the death penalty is that innocent people do get executed due to misidentifications. So I would prefer avoiding it as an option. For more info check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Innocence_Project

I am still trying to recover from reading this story. So awful. I hope there is a way to reach out and help this woman.

Then I would propose an amendment to every state that bans the death penalty to make an allowance for cases whose guilt is 100% accurate, such as in this case.

It's ridiculous that he does this and then we have to pay for his food, for the rest of this life. I'm sure inmates in the US live better than most starving people in the third world. Something is deeply wrong with that picture.

    • The next thread in line after this one has to do with open carry and the protection firearms afford pwople. Many on that thread decry the use of firearms and say they feel safer where there are no guns. Note that this occurred in New York, a place where only the elite are allowed the right to defend themselves. The European style anti gun laws in NYC didn't seem to deter our miscreant now did they. In all probability they did prevent our victim from seeing that she would not be a victim.
The criminal should be summarily executed. End of story. .30 cal ammo is about $.50 to $2.00 or so a round depending on petigree. I would be more than willing to toss $5 in the pot to defray ammo expense if that was a problem.

"Major changes in behavioral patterns. I can see from reading this that I am not alone in this--these aggressive patterns are not listed anywhere on a side-effect list that I ever found. I have since discovered that I cannot take ANY allergy medications, including Zyrtec, Allegra or Clarinex. Doctors did not believe that my behavior was a result of this, but it was. So, I just tell them now not to prescribe it to me."

This is a typical comment. Now imagine this combined with poor nutrition combined with an antidepressant I will post below this if I get the time.

I know it sounds dumb but there are several reasons why the USA has such astronomically high rates of violence not seen in other countries...it is not one reason.

      1. Nutritional deficiencies-cut violence by 1/3 in Prisoners study:
      http://current.com/items/88893414_uk_prison_research_nutritional_deficiencies_pl...

      2. Prescription Drugs and interactions-it is common in the USA for people to be on several kinds of OTC and Prescription Drugs at the same time.

      3. These combined with other factors like poor upbringing ..but my biggest concerns are the first two and the results of interaction are immediate.

For example here is the rating page for our beloved Claritin..it's bad stuff for many people and combined with poor nutrition and a cocktail of other drugs like antidepressants here is a source of terror like this rape and torture at Columbia could likely be..where is the coverage on what these violent criminals ate and took for drugs on a daily basis? Are they on one drug or a cocktail of drugs? Have they had a decent meal or are they subsising on coffee and Dunkin Donuts?

      This brutal rape was disgusting!
I'm sorry if I sounded like I was making light of it in any way. I have children in college and it hits home. But they just keep happening one after another in our country and we need to get to the root of it or it will keep happening more and more.
I am not sure if this monsters crime would have happened anyway in another country where people are not drugged up and malnourished.
in another country such as Japan where the rates of violence are much lower ..streets are safe for children to walk in cities alone at night.
If this monster had the had the proper health care and not the cocktail of drugs our people are all on..he might...just might not have done this.
I am of course not sure but don't we need to look at everything?
Why else do they keep happening?

DId you take one look at the link to the side effects of one drug?
Please do that if you want to understand where I am coming from...don't assume I am crazy unless you look at what thousands of other people are saying here.
I have watched with my own eyes normal people turn into violent monsters from these harmless over the counter drugs. harmless drugs..like allergy meds.
