Mugabe: if I lose the poll, we will wage war

A defiant Robert Mugabe yesterday vowed he would 'go to war' if he lost the presidential run-off due to take place in less than two weeks.

Describing the opposition as 'traitors', he claimed Zimbabwe would never 'be lost' again. Speaking at the burial of a veteran of the independence war, Mugabe said he would never accept the Movement for Democratic Change taking over. 'It shall never happen ... as long as I am alive and those who fought for the country are alive,' he said. 'We are prepared to fight for our country and to go to war for it.'

The threat was seen as an angry response to the pressure mounting on the government from other African leaders over the regime's harassment of the MDC leadership and supporters in the run up to the 27 June election.

Yesterday, MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai was arrested again and held for three hours as he tried to campaign in the countryside. There was also a stand-off between lawyers and police in Harare's high court before Tsvangirai's deputy, Tendai Biti, finally appeared before a judge.

    • The International community will sit back and watch as Mugabe suffocates Zimbabwe, due to the fact that no body really cares about a bunch of Africans who have nothing to offer, dying some thousands of miles away........ there is also the "oil" issue that most of you have pointed out.

I get the feeling that the International community are waiting for Zimbabwe to erupt into civil war, so that the idea of Africa being a basket case can be reinforced.

The majority of Zimbabweans want an end to all this, but the violence is only coming from one side. I highly respect those who are able to bare the suffering without retaliating ........... I really do hope the International community get off their comfortable seats and take action!!!!!

    • Someone told me once "One day your grandkids are going to ask what you did to stop the genocides in Africa. They are going to ask and you better have an answer."

    • The international community needs to bring pressure on Mugabe. Unfortunately that won't happen so he is probably going to end up as the dictator until he dies or is overthrown.

Dos anybody really deserve such a President?

Oh and if the Simbabweans deserve Mugabe, do the Amercians deserve Bush (I cant see a lot of Americans rallying in front of the white house to bring him down)?

the CIA could arrange the assassination of M. in less time that it would take to clean up bathrooms at the pentagon . as a tax paying citizen of this country (with a conscience ) if M. doesn't meet a mysterious end before he can go on another genocidal rampage i'll be even more outraged by this administration.

    • Who has the right to tell another country what to do?

Let me answer that for you.

No one does. So all this talk about what should be done is hogwash. It's pointless for no one has the right.

    • vote... or die? cake or death? Oh, I'll have cake please. Hmmn... I'm sure that most people would prefer to have their cake and eat it too, but not at the expense of their freedom to vote.

    • this would be a time when people expect an assassination, but the fact is killing mugabe benefits no one, except the zimbabweans, and it probably hurts a couple superpowers.

The thought crossed my mind as well, but I'm not familiar enough with the grit of the politics there to know if he'd become a martyr. I'm guessing not, with the disgusting acts he's been visiting on the civilians, but his regime could easily use his assassination to declare military rule, and it could easily result in even more atrocious things happening than have been happening up until now.

As harsh as your request sounds, I co-sign. Any one willing to slaughter innocent people because they can't get their way deserves to be exterminated like the vermin that they are. His existence is a threat to humanity.

Assasination is by definition plain self-justice. And we saw how well this worked out in Iraq.

What does it take for everybody to understand, that "removing" a person does not solve the underlying problems? I can tell you what will happen if somebody just kills Mugabe:

Some other "Big Man" from his entourage will take power (and kill a few competitors by doing it). While some people of Simbabwe may applaud th act of killing this SOAB, others will take advantage of the feeling, that their right to decide what happens in their country was ignored, and build upon a martyrdom of Mugabe.

In the end, nothing will be achieved.

The only real solution: Get the UN to move with a neutral force, capture Mugabe and send him to court.

    • The country is lost as long as he is in power, only with him removed does it stand a chance of recovery. Threatening to wage war is similar to the behaviour of a three-year-old that's just had a toy taken away.

    • Why would anyone bother with Zimbabwe, our governments are much too greedy to care about this country that is crippled by Mugabe.
War on Terror is it America? Are the people of Zimbabwe being terrorised?
      What? No oil is it?

      Disgusting.

    • These are serious words, to threaten your own people with war should be taken very seriously.

Isn't it about time the UN put together a multi national force and gently removed this autocratic dictator from power?

    • Until the leaders of the world including Mbeki speak out loudly and clearly against Mugabe then the situation will not improve. There is clear evidence of brutalisation and intimidation being carried out by Mugabe yet nothing is done. Why? I guess there is no oil in Zimbabwe
