The U.S. National Park Service is considering adding a five-star hotel to Alcatraz Island, site of one of the world's most notorious prisons.

what most of you have neglected to mention is that this is a very symbolic piece of land. Know your history, and if you don't look up American indian Movement or John Trudell.
Making this into a 5 star hotel or filling it further with commercialism , is like spitting in the face of Native americans, as if enough has not already been done. Give it back and while you are at it give back the treaty lands of 1868..

So they can build a casino on it instead? Not a bad idea since the American indian Tribes have done well with getting them built all over the state.

Why does every bit of land have to made into a tourist attraction or something for commercial gain?
And so you think the people got a fair shake ... oh yeah US kills millions takes all the land corals all natives to oklahoma and small reservations and so now the past 20 years there some casinos and everybody is like where my cut...?
please ! You ever been on a reservation? - 3 years ago

Nope but I've been to a few casinos and they're doing pretty good.
I've been to Alcatraz and it's not doing so good after being worked over and abandoned as a prison
If you were talking about Angel Island then I would agree since it's already in good shape because it has been kept free of developement so there is no reason to start on it.
Alcatraz is a different story though

I've been to Alcatraz, there isn't much to the "tourist attraction", all they use is a couple of cells in it, it's very short and boring tour.
The island has already been built on so it's already been "defaced"
So building on some of the other unused parts is only going to enhance the "tourist attraction" by giving something else to bring people there for since most of it is just going to waste.
The history isn't going anywhere and do you need empty buildings to make it "authentic?" it's significance as a prison doesn't need to have abandoned storehouses "preserved" to keep it a landmark

Considering Rushmore was originally sacred Native American land which now sells pictures of massacred cultural leaders in the gift shops... I'm sad to say most likely this hotel will happen. So sad.

Heck.. why not add a 5 star hotel in the middle of the Smithsonian since it is just sitting there.
Yeah its a building that sits there, like all other buildings in the world. The difference is this is a historical landmark that draws in millions of people every year and already has 5 star hotels on both sides of the bay catering to them.
Outside of having this be a total niche prison themed Disneyland, minus rides, established mass transportation, dinning, or all that fun stuff we need to live. This place already sees a lot of damage every year just from foot traffic. Adding a hotel to this would only increase this exponentially and degrading yet another US landmark in to the oblivion of cheap plastic souvenirs and commercialism.
This is not mentioning the increase in transportation costs to get guests, employees, regular tourists, food, and all other necessities from the island to the shore multiple times a day. Seriously, they can stay at already famous landmarked hotels in the city or in Marin that will cater to their every need. Besides there is a heck of a lot more things to do off the island then on.
Costs seriously out weigh the outcome in this case.

We'd be better off if we demolished the structures and made the island a wind turbine farm. It blows a steady 10-30 over the island most of the year.

With all of the bad energy that was present there it would probably be safe not to let hundreds of thousands even millions of people stay there with their families. I only hope that they really rethink this whole project because their could be some strange activities happening.

JJammer, it's already got a museum. You can tour the whole thing, and it's quite a popular tourist attraction already.
It really isn't 'just sitting there'. - 3 years ago

Unless it grew legs, it's just sitting there.
The museum could stay....there's plenty of room to make something that is a huge attraction to the world over. America needs things like that.

It's just sitting there. They could turn it into an interesting resort and keep some of it for museum like purpose.
It's a creative genius of an idea. People want buildings like they have in Dubai but they refuse to release an island to be a resort? Come-come they could make something most interesting.

does this logic apply to yosemite, or the amazon rainforest? some things can "just sit there" and still have intrinsic value. STOP
i think most san francisco residents would hate to see that development--not only is the island a tourist attraction and a piece of american history, it's also very pretty to look at when you're near the entrance to the bay. the contrast between the ever present container ships and the turn of the century architecture inspires a lot of thought.
STOP
the best point i've seen on this comment page is how inconvenient that would be for people staying at the hotel. as you can see in the picture, it is a tiny tiny island, look at the water tower or dock for scale. a hotel would be the only thing on the island, and who needs an island hotel?
STOP
worst of all if this plan goes through it will represent the transition from the 20th century to the 21st as a transition leading to consumer culture, a class system of which only the uppermost could ever visit this resort, and disregard for historical or natural aesthetics in favor of profit maximization and environmental unsustainability.

I live in Houston where we have the Astrodome. It's no longer in use. It just sits there. It takes up space and the only reason people want to keep it is because they are so use to it and it's historical value.
It's nice that a place can be a museum but is it paying for it's existence?
Trees don't have to pay they give oxygen so they actually do something. A building siting there does nothing and if it cost it to run it (such as a museum) and it's not making it's money back then why not turn it into something that will earn money?
If this world goes on there will be lots of buildings with historical value just because they are older. But just because something is older doesn't mean it should be saved or not used for something else to give it life.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
At least I visited it while it was how it was.
It's a bad idea anyways; not much you can do on the island more than a few hours. You tour it, and then what? Only so much you can see. Every time you want to get back on land, or back to your room, you have to rely on a ship to take you. It's very inconvenient if you forget something and have to take an extra two trips, or if you're drunk at 3a.m. in San Fran and have to find a way back home. And just imagine how much extra fuel is going to take to build it and transport people to and from the island. Unnecessary and a waste of money in opinion. Leave the island as authentic as it is.
