    • Demand it? The same way Americans demand better health care, equality, fair trade, the end of corporate corruption, & civil liberties?

In that case, we are fucked, because it's a fact that Americans are the least involved in the way their country is run, the most inactive when it comes to voicing their opinions and making them heard, and also the most apathetic when it comes to anything happening outside the U.S.

We put ourselves in this predicament, and all we do is "hope and pray" change is a coming. We put our trust in people who are part of the two party system keeping things the way they are, corrupt. Unless we vote for someone who will truly change things and take it to the streets and truly demand change, we're still the same ol' complacent Americans who'd rather be distracted by the pretty lights and sounds on their computer and television screens, or Ipods, than effectively participating in and directly influencing change.

    • Well we need the truth and we need it now. We have to demand it. Information is ours... it doesn't belong to some moron in the white house. It belongs to the people. It is time for the people of the US to Demand our Democracy back! Take back the news. If they are not broadcasting news then we need to challenge in court the licenses they have through the FCC. It is time! Some one get me a lawyer I am ready to take this story on and the high court!

If we really cared about our troops, we'd vote for Ralph Nader, many troops like him because they think he's the only one not full of shit, that's the same reason alot of them liked Ron Paul (I liked some of Paul's ideas, but he was a little too conservative when it came to his ideas on issues like border security, race, and some other social issues having to do with certain ethnicities).

    • Varyx_Sythe , those are the rules that the current news organizations supposedly follow. They use loopholes in the stock trading rule by being hosted by parent companies that are media conglomerates.

So, although I believe it would start off as a noble endeavour, it would quickly become the same monster our current news programs have become.

The news used to be pretty fair and unbiased, and did used to tackle some pretty important issues. The problem is like any other business, in order to grow they needed to join forces with the very people their news was targeting. And in order to keep the people's attention (Americans, well everyone really, is so obsessed with fluff stories and materialistic things), they had to take on corporate sponsors and cover "brain novocaine stories".

I fear in order to have an operation like the one you are talking about, it would take alot of money, and it would eventually fall into the same pitfalls. They would also have a lot of red tape to get around to putting a large operation like that on the air.

The only way to end this stranglehold on the news by corporations (including media conglomerates), we'd need to regulate corporations and their ability to swallow everything that needs money to operate on a large scale up and making it their own personal bitch or plaything.

    • Putting her on Meet the Press would be a waste. She's obviously great at what she does - going into the active areas and reporting what she sees. To take her out of that role would be to waste her talents. If, later on in life, she decides that she would rather have a "desk job," then definitely consider her for something like Mr. Russert's role. But not now. Give her more air time as she is, dangit!

    • She would do well to honor Tim Russert, if they ever decide to have another that would actually tell the truth. It's odd that we have to watch The Daily News with Tom Stewart on Comedy Central to actually get the truth. A comedy channel.......with actual informative news......they really put all the old news channels to shame, do they not?

    • this is just another in a long line of videos and reports that proves that the major networks in the US FAIL to cover the world as it really is. There is no point in even watching the news on TV anymore, you won;t know a thing, you are better of watching a cartoon.

What can be done, i'm not sure but interviews like this will help

    • I studied broadcast journalism in college and couldn't agree more with Lara Logan. The lack of news awareness by Americans is appalling and a direct result of our news sources. Its not only the media's fault for failing to educate us but our fault for failing to hold them accountable and encourage increased coverage.

    • American broadcast news doesn't provide anything of value and truth.

look for other media sources to figure out what is going on in this world.

also people like o'riley are not news reporters, they are entertainers carrying a corporate sponsered message of propaganda

    • You must be kidding to say Colbert and The Daily Show are less biased. During the primary, they trashed the Clintons along with the rest of the media. They're a chip in the flood to give the illusion of fairness. They're owned by the same financial interests, and they don't allow thinkers or arguments that would make a difference in how people think and act.

    • There is a way to counter what United States televised news has become; however, it is not cheap, easy, or necessarily pleasant.

What we need is to create a new and independent news organization that can span the nation. If we could do such a thing we would need to make a list of regulations for said organization to follow and make sure that those regulations are followed.

      Regulations and/or rules would include:

1)Do not state opinions when presenting the news. If you want to state an opinion then either do it separately online in blogs, or state your opinion on a separate show. And if you must state your opinion on those separate forums, make it crystal clear that you are stating an opinion and/or whether or not you are an expert on the subject. (Example, if you know nothing about the economy but have an opinion about it to share, make sure you let everyone know that you have no experience or expertise in the subject)

      2) With exception to certain government regulations about foul language and the showing of extremely violent or graphic images, do not cater to the governments whims about real news. This means if you are force fed a story by some government lacky (be republican or democrat) that isn't really news, don't report it. If the government says that you are not allowed to report the death toll of the troops or civilians in a conflict or war, report it! Also, check and double check your sources when fed any news. It is better to be a little later than other "news" stations in reporting the news if you can get the facts.

      3) Avoid brain novocaine stories like the plague if you can. A brain novocaine story is a story with no news value that distracts people from real issues while at the same time numbing the brain so that real issues don't seem so important. Anything involving Paris Hilton that does not involve the words, or any variation of the words, "death", or "sexually assaulted" is not news but a brain novocaine story. We don't need to know if she drove drunk on a suspended license, nor do we need to "glorify" her personal life by giving it attention. If you absolutely have to report such news, label it as "junk news", or "crap you don't need to know".

      4) Limit CEO pay, and ban payment from "special interest" organizations. CEO's have an important and stressful job, but that does not necessarily warrant a paycheck that goes into the millions. These people are thinkers and organizers, not football players. Pay them enough money so that they can live comfortably and easily save up enough money for retirement. Payment or "donations" from "special interest" organizations who will expect us to support them in their political through means through news broadcasts are also contrary to what is needed.

      5) Stock of the news company will not be publicly traded. There will be no hostile takeovers, especially through the purchasing of the news companies stocks.

There are people that are just complaining about the war, that don't follow it. They just want to be heard.

when you have insight like she does, you just need to listen.

    • more honesty is what we need, and she is definitely not afraid to give her opinion and tell her experiences as they actually occurred. censorship sucks. theres also a big problem with diversity in the media and how different view points are represented. the majority of who i see reporting news on tv are white men and the occasional white women, not that all of them are bad but there just needs to be more representation of all of the people who live in america, that's why this sight is so amazing.

    • So now, is HER life in danger?

Do you realize how many journalist have been killed by "friendly fire"?

Who says that we can't GET a news report about the caskets that return with some unemployed young people in it? Who says that we can't get news coverage like that? If we are "supporting the troops", how come we can't GET that news, and how COME when they COME back alive, they get treated like an ugly redheaded step child by my government? I work with veterans, and they tell me that they are going to get medical care for combat related ailments only for so long, and they after 5 years or so, they will have to figure out how to pay for medical care on their own.

We have, somehow got ourselves into a situation that we have no power, as ordinary citizens. How the hell did that happen?

Not by standing behind a government that doesn't give a shit about the structure and backbone of america ( ie THE CITIZENS ) So to those that stand behind bush and believe in war and trusting politicians who would draft you to war in a second while their kids go to ivy schools. Go ahead and be like JEROMECON and his completely brainwashed ignorance of our government and be a drone. I am more american than you will ever be!

That thinking is just the old style of Journalism. I cannot believe you would lose respect for a reporter just because he or she would give their own opinion Nick.
A reporter it is a human being that deserves to be heard just like anybody else. I actually like to have their opinions! They can act as a reporter and as a commentator. When they are doing that they are actually giving something from their knowledge. In the end it still up to us to make up our own mind in relation to the issues.

Unfortunately we will never know what is truly happening unless we witnessed it first hand but until then there are always other media outlets like BBC and Al Jazeera, which allow us to see different perspectives. I've been watching Al Jazeera for a few years now and it is quite graphic, but I would rather see the truth than be naive about the extent of the matter.
