Ford 'to make fewer big vehicles'

Car giant Ford has said it will cut its production of large trucks and large sports utility vehicles (SUVs) in favor of more fuel efficient models.

It will also delay the introduction of its new pick-up truck by two months.

The US economic slowdown has reduced sales and soaring fuel prices have put consumers off buying bigger vehicles.

Ford said it will make a loss this year and predicted that the worsening US economic situation would make it difficult for it to break even in 2009.

    • Ford, GM, Chrysler made 15% to 20% profit on SUVs (source: Time Mag. 02-16-2003). Since the early 1980s GM & Ford made small high MPG cars in Europe. They knew about all these things, but like many greedy companies, they hold on to the golden cow until it dies. In 1997 GM had a hybrid version of the EV1 ready for the US market, before the 1999 Honda Insight (source: Wiki). When will the USA stop being corporate fascist country and stop being a corporate solution driven country?

    • Besides HAHA and I really want to see this company crumble, I still can't believe that these people couldn't see this coming, and had to wait 'til they were on the verge of bankruptcy to change. They, the management, deserve no sympathy. Peak oil theory has been around for over 60 years, did these people just not educate themselves with energy issues? Did they think the world is a perpetual motion machine?

But all in all, all car companies are doomed to fail, because cars are in themselves unsustainable.

      Move to a city.
