No more Starbucks? Coffee company closes 600 stores in the US

Image
JanaPokana
Is the Starbucks era coming to an end? As more and more Starbucks stores open all over the U.K., the gigantic coffee company has announced that it is closing 600 underperforming stores all over the US. Furthermore, less than 200 new company operated stores will be opened in 2009.

Do you think Starbuck's time has come and gone? If so, what will come next?

    • I'm a coffee whore and Starbucks is my guilty pleasure - despite being a major chain, Starbucks is unique in providing that homie atmosphere...HOWEVER, the company definetely expanded too quickly and oversaturated much of their own marketplace while completely neglecting pockets of the country (Where I live you might be in for a 15 minute drive to get a decent cup of joe!)...

    • This was inevitable to happen, is really stupid the way they opened stores everywhere, sometimes with less than 100 meters distance between each other, in Leicester Square in London you can find 4 Starbucks in the same block, and this is without the competition.

    • Maybe if one of the effin' baristas could figure out how to make Awake Tazo Tea ICED.. then I would be a little sad. good thing I can make a pot by myself...
      as can ANYONE with coffee.
      It's called a coffeepot

      Directions:
1.) Pour water into designated area....
2.) Place 1 filter in holder
3.) Drop 2-3 (depending on desired strength) spoon fulls of coffee into filter...
4.) Hit the on button and watch Starbucks come alive in your kitchen!

Quit wasting your money people. .. for all of you "omg, starbuckkkkks! I'm so addicted..blah blah blah... I look orange...blah blah coffee is so cool.. "
Guess what.. you're not addicted to Starbucks, you're addicted to CAFFEINE!

Make your own shit... and buy less.. sooner than later..we'll all be in the poor house

    • I love the fact that Starbucks is closing. Most people think it is a fun place to be and work, and Let me be the first to say it is not. Starbucks has become the new McDonald's. Plus, all the additives they put inside the coffee can be the same as crack.

    • Hooray! Die Starbucks, die!

Oh, but that won't bring back the little independent coffee companies that closed down when you took over their towns, will it?

      Too late.

    • Er, yeah, the UK doesn't want them thanks...we've sent you Tesco in return though

having also worked in Starbucks, and having not been allowed to make customers' coffees the way they actually wanted them, I can speak from experience as bitter as their over-heated coffee.

Whilst I commiserate with the employees who've lost their jobs, and the shareholders who've lost their dividends (ha), all for the opportunity for more community spirited independents to open up...and hopefully not get 'proximity targeted' when they prove successful.

    • Of course it's not the end of Starbuck's, they just expanded way too fast. It's called downsizing, and every manufacturer in the US has been doing it for the past 7 years.

    • Good. The 3 times I was ever persuaded to go to one I felt like an idiot trying to figure out their menu. All I wanted was a simple cup of coffee. Not some designer frothy thing that cost as much as lunch. Personally, I've been making my own coffee at home for the past several years because of the ridiculous markup & have definitely saved quite a bit of money & gas.

    • parisians were shitting themselves when starbucks had plans of putting stores in the city center - now , in the outskirts of paris , you can walk out of one , and there'll be another directly across the street , and 2 more down the same block . closing 600 stores here in the US is nothing , it just frees up capital for further expansion abroad .

    • Only 600 closing, that's just a drop in the huge warming pot know as SBUX on wallstreet.

Peet's Coffee is far better! The first SBUX in Seattle's Pike Place Market sold Peet's Coffee, before they carried their own brand.

If you truly love coffee, just take the extra 5 minutes to brew a fresh cup at home... the lines at most SBUX is longer than that anyways...

    • I am a business major and Starbucks was one of our biggest examples! 4 years ago... I have come to the conclusion that Starbucks was going to be forced into closing some of their stores/locations. Why? You cannot run a company that has more fixed assets than it can liquidate. Seriously... dumbasses.

    • the only bummer will be the fact that these employees are loosing HEALTH INSURANCE!

starbucks is the #1 company in the states for treating its employees well AND
the worlds largest importer of fair trade goods.

it would be great if all mom and pop shops could give you health insurance, serve out of paper cups, and only have fair trade coffee...

    • They do have a lot of stores, like the infamous Starbucks across the street from another Starbucks. maybe it became too expensive to maintain all of the store. An Starbucks Better not go out of business, we'd have a full scale riot across the country, with me as its fearless leader!!!! VIVA LA STARBUCKS!!!!!!

    • Yeah, death to the evil empire!

They run locals out of business and only put up a mild "social responsibility" front, which really pisses me off.

They are the mascot for the faux yuppie/hippie movement which is green-washing our nation into a false sense of complacency. I swear they drug that effing coffee!

    • Starbuck coffee is toxic and many of their drinks are fattening.

      So less is more

I do like their idea of a "third place" where you can meet.
      It is brilliant marketing

    • This definitely shows a BIG problem in the United State's economy if one of its biggest corporations is packing up and moving out. This tells the United States consumer that their money is not that important to big multi-billion dollar corporations; thus, the big corporations will be moving to more economic prosperous nations-- for example, European nations. The Euro is well above the dollar, and if big corporations such as Starbuck's want to stay filthy (yes filthy) rich, then they need currency that means something. Seeing that they can be billionaires in Europe, imagine what that would make them in the states considering the price of the Euro is nearly twice as much as the Dollar. Now there is some coffee for thoughts!

    • I was pleased and amused to find Starbucks
at Bumrungrad Hospital in Bangkok Thailand
two Christmas' ago. Though I don't normally
drink coffee in the US, it was irresitable 5000
      miles from home.
      Supply and Demand....the marketplace
determines what lasts. Levi's are still around!
      Thank God.
Now THAT would be a loss!

    • Nothing againts Starbucks but I'd rather support my local Mom and Pop coffee shop. I have no problem with the store closing. I just hope the laid off employees will find jobs as soon as possible. It's not easy being jobless in this unstable economy.

    • There are three on the same corner here. I'm sure they are not closing. There are four within the a mile of one another at another location and I bet they don't close.

I don't think the major cities are going to lose any.....I have never been to a slow Starbucks here and I've been to many.

    • I think Starbucks is too much of a corporate giant to be thwarted by just shutting 600 stores. Their customers are loyal to the point of addiction; I'm sure the Starbucks following will still be strong.

As a native Seattleite, it's always cool to say that Starbucks is from my hometown haha hooray!

    • no. I dont think Starbucks is going anywhere anytime soon Americans need it to much. maybe there just making a different business approach. There are Starkbucks on every street conner in every major city in the U.S maybe they just need to cut back a little.

    • 600 Starbucks closing? Damn now there will only be 9,999,400 to choose from. I going to have to walk a whole block now. If this means the end of Starbucks I might just have to go back to smoking crack.

    • I hope the Sbucks era is over. I worked there when I was first out of college for the health care benefits...but sadly they were a lot easier to lose than they were to get or to keep. Very irritating. Plus, they talk a good game - calling employees partners, benefits for part time workers (if you can get 'em and keep 'em...), etc., but in reality, they don't treat their workers very well, as I learned firsthand unfortunately.

They do make a good cup of coffee though.

I too long for the end of the Starbucks era. I worked at Starbucks for a year when I was 16. It remains the only job I ever walked out of. My 12 cent yearly raise wasn't really worth the stress.

i too worked for them for almost three years... unfortunately, though, they don't make a good cup of coffee. I invite you to go on a "coffee tour". Go around any city in the US, or the world! you will see that starbucks over-roasts and then over-charges the consumer for its coffee.

    • The Starbucks era is just getting started...

Limit the availability of what people want.....

Now the remaining stores will be overperforming...

      Brilliant!

Americans aren't giving up their coffee..

They'll cry about $4 gas, but $4 coffee, nah...
