Rafael Nadal won his fifth Grand Slam title by knocking off five-time defending Wimbledon champion Roger Federer in five thrilling sets.

Nadal fell short the first two times he faced Federer in the Wimbledon finals, but he held on to win this time around, pulling off a 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-7 (8), 9-7 upset. He became the first man since Bjorn Borg in 1980 to win the French Open and Wimbledon in the same season.

Sunday's encounter was the sixth Grand Slam title match between the No. 1-ranked Federer and No. 2 Nadal, more than for any other pair of men in the 40-year Open era.

Nadal leads the head-to-head series 12-6, though away from clay, Federer leads 5-3.

    • Are you kidding, this was the best match i have ever witnessed on TV. Both players played at the top of their games for over 4 1/2 hours, tell me one NBA,NFL, or MLB star who could ever state that. This was truly one of the best displays of competition ever witnessed.
You must not have ever played sports to make such a dumb statement.
