Half of UK military forces 'ready to quit'

Almost half of UK military personnel are ready to leave the forces, a Ministry of Defence survey suggests.

Some 47% of Army and Royal Navy respondents and 44% of those in the RAF said they regularly felt like quitting.

The UK Army is already short of some 5,000 soldiers, amid worries that experienced young officers and senior NCOs are leaving at an increasing rate.

Among the concerns raised by the 9,000 servicemen and women surveyed were the frequency of tours, levels of pay and the quality of equipment and housing.

    • I'm not surprised when a traffic Warden earns more than a guy a country asks to lay down his life in protection of it's sovereignty.

    • We are still in the dark ages wanting to blow each other up over and over again, de escalate now !.

But before we do here is a quick message to all the loyal and brave men and women who enrolled in the forces,,,,,,,

You joined the army, the army fights politicians dirty wars, you vowed to lay down your lives in some dark god forsaken corner of the world far away from your family and friends so back room deals can be brokered amongst the power hungry, your safety and comfort is not important to your masters. I can understand that was a mistake and now half of you are changing your minds. There is no glamour in the death and destruction of innocents, fathers and mothers, grandfathers and grandmothers. When you come home, spread the word 'War is Bad' so others do not make the same mistake.

    • Maybe if their government would stop allowing them to be used to aid certain other nations in illegal wars they'd feel prouder to be part of their military.

    • The UK needs to up its military spending to 3% of GDP for a start so that some of the issues can be addressed.
The TA needs to be increased and this can best be done by re-establishing pals battalions with very close knit local ties and instituting a reserve where old farts (like me) and other non-combat people can take up slack in administration and other non-combat roles relieving troops of duties when at home so that they can get more leave.

In the short term recruit more Gurkha and other Foreign Auxiliaries, establish ethnic regiments such as Sikh regiments and maybe recruit from the Indian sub-continent to alleviate manpower shortages. These foreign auxiliaries should be offered British Citizenship after 5 years (Min) service or upon being declared medically unfit due to injury whilst serving if this occurs before the 5 year minimum term.

    • The question becomes will the UK military leaders let them leave? The US military has violated their own rules to force enlisted men and women to remain in the service. Why should the UK be any different? (Thought I sincerely hope they are.)

    • Take a look at this interview with one British soldier who returned from Afghanistan completely disillusioned with the military.
