Climate catastophe?: Giant Glacier melts during Arctic winter

Part of the "White Giant" glacier in Argentina has collapsed for the first time ever during the southern hemisphere winter.

The Glacier itself is 18 miles long and 200 feet high, and divides Lake Argentina in the west of the country. It is prone to small collapses like this about every four years, but, as park warden Carlos Corvalan explained, "This is the first time the glacier has broken up in the winter time".

The last time the Ice collapsed, it was watched by 10,000 visitors and a film crew, but as a collapse in winter was thought impossible, only a handful of tourists and locals were around this time.

    • I believe that Islamic Militants exist that buy their weapons from Communist countries with American dollars used to purchase OPEC oil. Those are facts, but the idea that humans are mainly responsible for Global Warming is not obviously true.

Modern technology is very close to sustainable environmentally friendly alternatives to fossil fuels. However, the so great majority or so called environmentalists are not really looking for solutions. They are foolishly looking for attention by yelling fire in a crowded theater, Planet Earth. They need to have a climate conference in Mecca. That might change their priorities and prompt them to do something constructive.

    • You're completely right with those examples: but I'm sure you appreciate that these were due to natural changes (mostly volcanoes).

The amount of Carbon Dioxide, a greenhouse gas, which we are putting into the atmosphere does not happen naturally. You certainly can't deny that we are doing this. The only consequence of putting unnatural amounts of a greenhouse gas into the atmosphere is unnaturally high temperatures.

    • If the climate has never changed so fast before, why did the Vikings in Greenland starve to death? There are written records of how fast it happened.

The last Ice Age ended mysteriously about 12,000 years ago. Recently evidence has been found that a comet may have caused the ice to rapidly melt and may have killed most of the coastal populations of people, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carolina_bays .

Then we know about the Indonesian Volcanoes, including Krakatoa, and the rapid World temperature changes associated with their eruptions, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krakatoa . If Krakatoa had erupted 500 years earlier we might still not know why crops failed all over the World.

    • granted: I should have said for the first time ever In living memory. The point is not that the planet's climate has not changed before, but that it is doing so hundreds of times faster than ever before, and that this is bad news for us.

Of course there have been ice ages, but these have been separated by thousands of years, not tens of years as we are observing unambiguously now.

    • The statement "for the first time ever during the southern hemisphere winter" is obviously not true. Just during the last 1000 years the Earth has had both hotter and colder periods than today. Greenland was colonized by Vikings who grew crops and raised cattle during the warm period and the cold ended their colony during the Little Ice Age.

No accurate climate records for more than the last 200 years exist for this glacier and most of the Americas. All of the ice from year x to y could have melted and what would ice cores say about that? 3.5 million years ago the isthmus of Panama changed water currents dramatically. Lots of really big thing have happened that we are just recognizing, http://www.usask.ca/geology/classes/geol206/glacial.html
      .

I am for developing 21st century technology to replace fossil fuels with sustainable environmentally friendly alternatives, but Al Gore and others of his ilk are not credible in this area. Gore graduated from Harvard with a Bachelor of Arts degree in government cum laude on June 12, 1969.
